Ah see, that's not an issue for me because I'm hyper-connected. This girl took some pictures a few weeks back where I am clearly Lil-Jon-Outta-Your-Mind hammered. Facebook to email, email to the phone, phone always in hand. They were probably up for no more than 3 minutes before I got her to take them down.
me too BUT, I also travel for work, take vacations, etc. And some of my friends have no taste. Its enough of a recipe for disaster that I keep my boss from seeing my wall.

Yeah there's a few managers and partners on there. I think they know not to friend me, and I certainly know not to friend them.

Yeah been FT since September. Been on a bit of a life binge the past two months, just regaining my laser beam focus this week. I'm ~1100 pages behind on CFA L2 material.

Since I started facebook in 2005 I have probably defriended more people than I've kept.
I've noticed a definite anti-facebook backlash in my social group over the past couple of years. I just find it's just not as useful once you're off a college campus - and once it's not used for social organizing it becomes little more than a glorified flickr.
The real reason I haven't deactivated my account is that my mom and aunts would be mad at me. They just joined facebook recently and they're still excited about it. I guess that age range is facebook's growth market right now.

I think its just as useful, if not more so, post-college. I didn't have to do anything to find out what people were up at when I was in school. Its a lot harder to do when every one is working/doing their own thing.

I'm on the brink of terminating it as well. I predict these social sites become more specialized in time. For example, there's really no reason to be on FB for networking purposes if you're also on LI unless you do just want to keep the FB account to stalk girls and keep up with old friends.
In my opinion, doctors would prefer social networking sites that were just for doctors over FB, as would attorneys, as would accountants, as would homosexuals, as would members of other races, as would Christian groups, etc. This FB eutopia, if society is any model, is bound to either specialize further or see increased competition from more specialized social networking mediums, in my opinion.
The one thing that truly is amazing about FB? The ability for advertisers to reach hundreds of millions of users with such ease.

You are cold blooded. I just need to force myself to cut them loose. My fear is that I will de-friend them and it will immediately start suggesting me to them to add. It happened to me after I broke up with my last girlfriend. I immediately started getting suggestions from her sister who I was previously friends with...she defriended me and it basically let me know.
The key to solving the problem of repeat friend requests from people you don't want to be friends with is just keeping their requests in que for all time. That way, when they see your account it just says "Friendship Requested" or whatever and doesn't allow them to request your friendship again. It also doesn't look like you outright denied their request.
But then again, who cares?

There's all kinds of people I'm "friends" with that I talked to once, at an exchange 3 years ago while dressed like a golf pro, that I haven't talked to since. Still can't de-friend.
What kind of exchange is that? No cool themes like "Viagra and Sweatpants?"

The Napster guy has this now:

Path, a new social networking startup launching today, is sort of the anti-Facebook. The big idea is that it lets you share photos (for now, more features probably coming someday) with a maximum of 50 people -- your inner circle. You can read much more about it at Path's blog. This is sort of the opposite of sharing things on Facebook. That's because Facebook is constantly pushing you to expand your friend circle and publish more stuff publicly -- trends that will likely continue as Facebook announces its email product today. Path's idea is one worth pursuing: Facebook is now -- by design -- too public for many people to share some of the stuff they'd only want to share with family and close friends.

Interesting. The invasion of privacy issue is going to become a concern once people start using facebook as a means through which to commit sexual and/or violent crimes.

Let me start by saying I think this is all overblown. People committed crimes before there were computers, they'll continue to commit crimes now.
But to the extent people do use the social networks to this end, it won't be facebook, it'll be foursquare. With foursquare installed on your phone, your location is constantly updated as you walk around - Cous has exited the Starbucks on Veterans, Cous has entered Dorignac's. Some people think their friends are interested in every move they make.

In terms of a black swan related to Facebook, I was thinking of national security type stuff. It's just disturbing to me how much info they've accumulated.

Yeah but you still have to tell it what's up. Facebook has the same thing built into it now. I use it regularly to tell people I'm cool and go to bars.
