And I'll give you an even better one, and a guy that went to my HS around the same time as Livingston
Andre Brown
I think he was like 8 in the country in scoring and had a game where he scored 83 points or something. Apparently there was an epic match up with Livingston where both players were the whole team.
Pretty sure this game never happened b/c Andre's sr year we beat them in the first round of the playoffs, then 2 rounds later lost to Randy. So I think they were possibly going to play but never did.
And although Andre was great, he was no where near as good as Randy.

Some of these guys listed are just overrated players.
When I think of "Best That Never Was"...it implies that if they "were", they would have been one of the best.
Alot of guys listed here are just people that were rated highly but couldn't cut it.
Injuries
Jail Time
Drugs
Death
Disease
etc...that's best that never was.
And oh yeah...Ernie Davis

I was only six at the time but what about Chris Jackson or Mohammed Abdul-Rauf or whatever his name is/was.
Does not belong on this list. He played in college and the pros and had the opportunity to have a career. He was the best he ever was, but he was not the best there there ever was.
When I think of this category,
Ernie Davis, Len Bias, and Hank Gathers come to mind immediately.
But there's another name I haven't seen mentioned:
Billy Cannon Jr.
Coming out of high school in 1980 (I think), he was voted the McDonald's All American defensive captain. He was highly recruited by a number of colleges. When he was at Broadmoor, I am pretty sure that he lettered in football, basketball, baseball, and track. He played offense and defense in football and even kicked sometimes. He was drafted into the pros for football and baseball. He got injured and it was all done.

To the guy calling out Barry Sanders for being soft you have obviously never read his book, Now You See Me. Calling out Barry Sanders for having no heart is ridiculous.

Len Bias is the correct answer.
