Marion Barber and Lawrence Maroney at Minnesota

ETA: By far not the best but a damn good duo

First one that came to mind for me was Barry Sanders & Thurman Thomas.

These two rarely shared the field. Sanders was on the bench mostly until Thurman graduated.

Now.....Ricky Williams & Priest Holmes did share the field often......

quote:

Together, Blanchard and Davis formed perhaps the most famous backfield in college football history. Dubbed "Mr. Inside and Mr. Outside" by columnist George Trevor of the New York Sun, Blanchard and Davis helped lead Army to three consecutive unbeaten seasons, going 27-0-1 from 1944 to '46.

Army won national championships in each of their first two seasons together and finished second to Notre Dame in 1946, after the teams played to a famous 0-0 tie at Yankee Stadium on Nov. 9, 1946.

"Blanchard was just a great player," said ESPN college football analyst Beano Cook. "He and Davis were probably the most famous duo in college football history. In the 1940s, it was Laurel and Hardy, Abbott and Costello, and Blanchard and Davis. The two of them together were what made them so special. If you mention one player, you always mention the other. They were together."

But do you think Ingram and Richardson will still be regarded as such in the next few years?

I honestly don't think so. I would not be surprised if 10 years from now, Ingram is hardly remembered.

I'm just not sure if the OP means talent judged by CFB accomplishment or wants to include Pro accomplishments as well.

But as for the best backfield in CFB history. The answer is pretty easy.

I believe Maroney and Barber were the only 2 back duo to both post back to back 1000 yards season in CFB history. Thanks impressive.

Barber

2003 207 1196 5.8 17
2004 231 1269 5.5 11

Maroney

2003 162 1121 6.9 10
2004 217 1348 6.2 12

But despite what anyone says, can you really beat 2 NFL HOFers in Sanders and Thomas?

Clinton Portis/Frank Gore/Willis McGahee/Najeh Davenport <-- 4 is just crazy sick btw

So much for the argument that Newton is a QB I guess.

if you're going to include that trio, what about dalton hiliard and labrandon toefield.

Huh?

Dalton Hilliard, Garry James, Gene Lang, and throw in Sammy Martin for good measure.

Woopigsooie20: At the time when I heard it they may have been, but good point out. Clearly they arent alone anymore.

I would have taken Maroney/Barber over Williams/Brown back then. Can't really count Jacobs since he really didn't play at all for Auburn.
