re: Origins of Apathy: LSU Has Not Won a Big Game in Three Years

It's funny how a great original post is being destroyed.
It isn't original and it isn't great. If we would have beaten Bama in 08 would fans be happier today? No, they wouldn't. If we would have beaten Georgia? No, in fact it wouldn't have been a "good" win because they wouldn't have finished in the top 10. Do people realize that if Georgia Tech would have beaten us then they would have finished 9th or 10 that year?

The OP explains exactly why apathy eventually overrides what you just replied. If it was just last year, fine. It was a rebuilding year. We got pissed and didn't do so hot, but so what right? But that's not the case. It has been the same thing for 3 years in a row now. 3. Three.
If that's how you feel, GFY. I could watch LSU with the same passion and intensity year in and year out because they are MY frickING TEAM. Apathy only manifests in those who were never really interested in the first place.

Well LSU is going to get two shots in 3 weeks. Any more excuses?
How is it an excuse. I've seen fans dismiss past wins because it wasn't the end of the year rankings.
And did you fail to read my post? Twice in a strong year...meaning this year, particularly on the side of the West, is a strong year. Auburn has the Heisman frontrunner and Bama the reigning title. Not exactly the norm is it.
It's simply wondering what is a big win. If it's just that criteria, Oregon has beaten Stanford. Should we go about dismissing their win over USC because it was against a team with three losses and not against a top ten team? No. Simply put, that was a good win for them. Was the win over Stanford better? Of course. But it doesn't mean they only have one good win.

Maybe he doesn't want to because they are his to waste.
Chances are he had the tickets for a while now because he bought them when you couldn't give two tickets away (like I did) and held on to them. We got lucky with Saban when owning seats became a premium, and now still have them (same two seats we had through Arnsparger, Archer, Hallman, Dinardo, and Saban). When some of you say stuff like, "give your tickets up" you're not taking into account why we have our seats to begin with. We sat through some miserable times, had them through great times, and now have them through "blah" times. But, they are our seats and no you can't have them!

The ones telling others to give up your tickets, do you actually own any? Or do you act like a big supporter when times are good.
I was buying my season tickets when they sucked. Where were you at?
Don't say shite if you're not pulling anything out of your pockets. And if you really wanted tickets that bad, you could afford them.

You don't get it, and you are far from being the type of fan who actually makes a difference.
Die hard fans that support hell or high water are not signs of a successful team. You're not going to sell out a stadium full of fans who are there to support whatever product is put on the field in today's economy.
It's the bandwagon fans that make a difference. The ones who buy apparel with numbers, and can't tell you what player has or had that number. When these people stay home, you have concerns as a program.
I'll give you an example. I have a good friend who has travelled with me to away games, and owns 4 season tickets. Because he has 3 children under the age of 4 and his wife works weekends, he sold his tickets this season. His wife is off this weekend, so I invited him to come with me and use one of my tickets, free of charge. He said he'd rather watch it on TV and help with the kids. Now, keep in mind, this guy was a diehard that many times would try to keep me positive, when my pessimism had taken over.
This guy stayed for the entire Troy game in '08, and to my knowledge had not missed more than one game in a decade, until this year. He doesn't feel the product on the field is worth the effort under Miles anymore. I don't think he's alone, and neither does the administration.
I am certain changes are imminent. It's been several years now since I recall walking out of Tiger Stadium feeling as though I had witnessed one example of a well coached team. The majority of Tiger fans do not possess the ability to scream and stomp in bliss for 60 minutes just because they have a chance to see their team play. They are now required to invest in the opportunity to follow their program and keep it competitive with the other programs in their conference.
The people you refer to are in the student section, a few years removed from the student section, or make one or two games a year by standing out in front of the stadium paying pennies on the dollar for their chance to see their team play.
These are not the people capable of keeping the program at an elite level.

There are only so many times that a fanbase can whip itself into a frenzy. There are only so many times that Tiger Stadium can rise to Olympian heights. There are only so many disappointments a man can stand before he begins to distance himself from the wellspring of his sorrows. In the last two and a half seasons, LSU has had six chances to defeat Top 10 teams and reclaim its throne. The Tigers have come up short every single time.
I agree with this.

Actually, if you include Penn State (ranked 11 when we played them), the Bama game will represent LSU's 8th opportunity to beat a Top 10 team in the last 2.75 years.

As a fanbase, our fans see this pattern as well and thus, contrary to your premise, rightfully in a lot of instances, anticipate bad outcomes...even in winning.
I see the pattern as logic dictates it. I am also naturally irrational when it comes to football. The very essence of the game insists you be able to defy the odds... or the patterns. If you wish to concede that the same mistakes will be made and that these mistakes will cost us the "big" games, you may be right, but you have lost what it means to believe in your team and you have relinquished your fandom.
I recognize the truth, but realize that ignorance is bliss. I could be like you, or I could continue enforcing my artificial amnesia and be able to feel genuine excitement for each and every day. Yours may be the more technical and expert opinion, but mine is a hell of a lot more fun.
And that's the reason I watch the games.

So we choked the game away when we lost in overtime to the top team in the country?
And "big games" are when a team is in the top ten? You do realize that UF may still win the East this year right? And that MSU is sitting at 7-2.
It's amazing how some are entrenched that they can't see the shite even though they are neck deep into the colon. a 3 loss Fla. and a 7-2 Miss State are now considered big wins.
This Poster is spot on to those of us who have the ability to see the big picture. Mile has lulled you people into a trance with his "smoke & mirrors" record. People fail to admit or recognize what this team has done not only in the truly big games, but how they have finished the season in the last 2 years. I promise you, this year will be no different.

Bullshite!! There are only 12 games ALL YEAR long! Only 7 or 8 home games. The fan base needs to get off their unentightled asses and quit being such pussys! God I'm getting sick of LSU's fanbase!
Then find another team.

I agree with this.
If it only takes both of you two and a half seasons to become completely dissatisfied, apathetic, and unable to "rise to the occasion" for a big game, obviously you weren't a fan until the beginning of this decade. If your fanhood is lost in such a short amount of time, it is likely bought just as quickly. To me that's bandwagon. That's fine, but that's what it is.

Ga Tech 2 years ago (big bowl game)
When a Peach Bowl victory becomes a big, major bowl win for us, we've slipped into mediocrity. I thought the Indy Bowl in 1995 and the Peach Bowl in 1996 was a huge win. That was before the recent SEC and National Championships.
What's that I hear about us not wanting to go back to the Dinardo years. Wake up! We're there.

You completely missed the point. And, fwiw, being a fan of LSU football two decades ago means exactly WHAT nowadays? Are those players and coaches on the field?

I'm simply wondering what your idea of a big win is. If you want to swallow down the OP's logic, then like is said, a team like Oregon (by year's end) may not have a single "big win" all season as Stanford could lose another game and find themselves outside the top ten.
Point is, nobody is happy with the current state of the program, but i take issue when a "big game" is based on being a top ten team.

How is that not a big game? It's arguable it could be an even BIGGER game.
