In the 18 years since the SEC has had 12 teams, two divisions and a conference championship game,
LSU has advanced to the championship game 4 times, which is 22% of the time.

The most appearances by a team from the West is 7 by Alabama, or 39% of the time. Auburn and Arkansas have had 3 appearances each (17%), and Miss St has had 1 (6%). Ole Miss has not yet played in a conference championship game (0%).

Besides Ole Miss, three teams from the East have never played in the SECCG (S. Carolina, Vanderbilt and Kentucky).

The West team has won the SECCG 7 times, or 39% of the time. The East has won 11 times (61%).

Today, there are more great coaches and much more parity in the SEC. Certainly, it can be expected that S. Carolina and Ole Miss will begin winning a bigger share of division titles, since they have been shut out prior to now. Even Kentucky and Vanderbilt would be expected to occasionally win a division title from here on out. And as those teams begin winning more, the division title percentages of the more successful teams during the first 18 years will necessarily be reduced accordingly.

But let's ignore the new parity reality, and assume LSU continues to represent the West at its same rate of 22% of the time.

Then, let's assume LSU wins the conference championship 50% of the time it plays. (Historically the West has won only 39%.)

Based upon those assumptions, LSU can realistically anticipate winning an SEC Championship 11% of the time, or once every 9 years.

If the SEC Champion makes it into the BCS title game half the time (a very generous assumption over the long-term), then LSU can realistically expect to play for a national championship once every 18 years.

And, if we win 50% of our BCS title games, LSU can realistically expect to win a national championship once every 36 years.

The above represent realistic expectations based upon actual historic data and somewhat generous assumptions of future LSU performances within the new parody of the SEC.

These projections illustrate how incredibly fortunate we have been to have won 2 BCS titles in the last 7 years.

And, despite obvious long odds against us, it is still possible for LSU to play for another BCS title this season.

So here we are once again in 2010, in another national title discussion. Yet, many Tiger fans have nothing positive to say.

And, if we had just prevented 1 or 2 big plays at Auburn, we could very well be 8-0 and ranked #1 or #2 in the current BCS poll.

It seems to me that Coach Les Miles and this 2010 football team deserve just a little more support, a little more credit and a lot more respect from many so-called Tiger fans.

we know we can't win it every year. we miss the fun of being in the hunt more often. we can't win it if we are eliminated by losses in October.

Your analysis is fricking stupid given that LSU has spent a great deal of its history hiring buffoons and systematically underperforming.

Historical averages mean nothing.

So, you're saying that you're HAPPY to win the SEC once a decade and a NC once every 36 years????
Our program is better than that and deserves more than that. Paying a coach 4M per year and perennial top 10 recruiting classes deserve more than that.

The excuses people will keep coming up with for Les. Guess we have to wait 11 years to fire any coach, no matter how good or bad the team looks.

this

This isn't the 1990's. With the rise of our program, it's compete for the West regularly or it's not good enough. We're still in the hunt, but we all fear that it looks more like this:

But let's ignore the new parody reality, and assume LSU

We can safely assume LSU's new reality IS a parody.

I think parity is the word you are looking for, and all your stats are great, and I do understand where you are coming from, however....given our three year history which is a pretty good sample. The only way we can realistically expect to compete is if other teams take a step back.

Not a good postion to be in.

Your logic fails in assuming LSU's program moving forward should replicate what is has done in the past. LSU currently has better facilities, more resources, more national exposure, and less political interference relative to the other SEC schools then it has in the past. Moving forward, LSU should win or compete for the SEC and national championships as often as Alabama and Florida and more often then every other school in the conference without exception.

Either way I think you miss the point on what upsets most fans. The results are what they are, and Miles winning percentage is what it is. However, for the third year in a row we have had a unit (Defense 2008, Offense 2009 and now 2010) rank near the bottom in the nation. Not only is the head coach getting paid extremely well, but the assistants are also. Miles has continually shown that he can't fix problems during the season and his teams generally don't get better as the season progresses. This will always be UNACCEPTABLE at LSU. Add to this the clock management problems and the continued disorganization (see final LSU play of Auburn game) and I think Tiger fans are very justified in thier discontent.

So when your kid comes home from class with an F in Algebra, I bet you dig up the history of grades in that class to convince yourself that it's ok he failed it.

More to the point, LSU has severely bucked the odds you suggest by winning in the last nine seasons: 4 West titles(tied for a 5th)
3 SEC titles
2 National titles.
Which brings us to the current disgruntlement because we fans have good reason to have high expectations. We have become spoiled, which is human nature when things go very nicely over an extended period of time. Further, we see what appears to be a possible down-turn in said good times and we don't like it one bit. That's what fans are for, ain't it?
