There seems to be a common held belief on this site that JJ was a horrible QB last year and that his performance has just carried over to this year.

Last years stats:

2166 Yards Passing, 17 TDs, 7 Ints
171 Yards Rushing 1 TD

This years stats (through 7 games):

577 yards passing, 2 TDs, 7 Ints
207 yards Rushing, 4 TDs

If you extrapolate his numbers over 13 games (# of games played last year), he projects:

1072 Yards Passing, 4 TDs, 13 INTs
384 Yards Rushing, 8 TDs (rounding up)

With that being said, can any remember an SEC quarterback making that big of a backstep from one season to the next? Seems like Tyler Watts from Bama back in the late 90s took a big back-step, but due to injuries. Anyone else?

I agree. I remember JJ passing the ball much better last year. Something is going on with him and his confidence. I think it's safe to say that he is better than what he has shown of late

A lot of it is film that opposing coaches now have on him. Watch the progression of the Peach Bowl where he looked awesome, compared to now.

You can use the same thing with Garrett Gilbert of Texas. He looked great in the second half against Bama but hasn't looked near that good at any time this year. So people ask why..

It's very similar to baseball and some lights out reliever. All of the sudden, opposing coaches begin to understand what they don't like to do and what they do poorly. They realize how he locks on to his main read, doesn't understand certain pressures, and can't audible. We all love to be arm chair QBs, but there are some great coaches out there who know how to exploit inept QBs. You're seeing this firsthand.

This is one of his bigger problems, probably the main reason his passing stats are so poor. That and a noodle arm.

I never got past this. If anyone thought he was terrible last year, they are badly mistaken. If we had the JJ from last year, no one would be worried.

nah, I think his confidence is shot. he played a pretty good game against UNC. not great, but pretty much on par with his post-bye 09 games. since, he's been spectacularly bad. I can't recall seeing anything like this before.

Remember. We didn't sustain many drives at all. Also, UNC was playing with young defensive backs that were out of position (defense & special teams). Even on his throw to Randle, ball was late and Randle had to wait on it. He was so wide open it didn't matter. Remember, Jefferson does not ever throw to where a WR will be. So that makes it very difficult to be successful at this level.

oh I remember, I was there. he wasn't just lights out or anything, but he was 15/21 and managing the game fairly well. pretty good decisions with the exception of the grounding play. the fumbling hurt most that game, and that wasn't on him.

I didn't think his reads vs. Vandy were bad, but his throws were just horrible. routine throws he'd made before seemed like they were just impossible to complete. and it's just been since.

All of this shouldn't be any big surprise. Remember the spring game? He was seriously worse then.

I disagree with the poster who said that JJ has a noodle arm. I think his arm is more than adequate. what I don't understand is how inaccurate he has been compared to last year. I basically agree with the assertion that DC's have caught up with him, but the big drop in accuracy is still puzzling.

Anyway, while I hate it for JJ, the simple fact is that he is failing to move the team on a consistent basis.

Guys its more than just his passing. He makes poor reads, he looks anxious, and he doesn't see the field. Crowton's desire to run all his Offensive schemes is the last thing JJ needs.

I can't really think of any that have dropped off that much.

Snead for Ole Miss took a nose dive after having a damn good year in 2008. But his yardage and completion % only decreased a little. However, he went from 26 TDs and 13 Ints. in 2008 to 20 TDs and 20 Ints. in 2009. He had four games where he threw 3 or more Ints. And he was awful in their bowl game. Yet he decided to enter the draft??? Yes, in his sophomore year he was being projected as a high NFL pick, but he was really bad in some of his junior year games. He didn't even get drafted. I wonder who the hell he was listening too.

As for JJ, he has just gone backwards. I don't think it has that much to do with film because he has never been that dynamic. I'm sure there are some things that coordinators key on because of the film, but it doesn't take a whole year to catch on. His inability to get rid of the ball fast has been there basically since the beginning. Any coach with the Florida film from midway during the season last year should have been able to see every bad tendency he had. Yet, he had some of his best passing games in the back half of the season.

It seems like it's in his head and his attitude. It's hard to really get better when you're not quite willing to recognize that you need to improve. He holds the ball too long just like he did last year. But his accuracy has completely plummeted. He was way more accurate last year and it shows in his completion % and his Int./TD ratio. And our O-line and running game is actually better this year.

Agreed. Remember he stared down Tolliver and got picked. Also, you noticed simple passes out of the backfield also got batted down because they read his eyes. Same point on how he locks down on one WR.

actually, he didn't. he looked left, then back right. he just threw about as bad a ball as possible. and it didn't matter if he stared at him because it was 1 on 1 near the goal line, he just needed a good throw.

this is how it should have looked:

or like the 1 he threw to TT against AU last yr. instead he left the ball about 5 yds short.

That's actually an interesting comment comparing Gilbert and Jefferson. Film has a lot to do with game play and it seems to be exposing JJ's weaknesses. This explains why les is limiting lee's touches as well as ford. The less these guys play come auburn, bama, and arkansas week the opposing team will slip up as far as lining up the wrong way or misreading a play.

Where is Tommy Hodson
With this talent LSU would be unbeatable.

there was plenty of film on him for the Alabama and Ole Miss games. I thought he played well against them.

He is awful now

He's completely regressed.

He made some decent steps last year, which gave some of us cause to believe he may have a very good year. Unfortunately, he completely went backwards.
