re: WKU Game Rewatch Observations

I noticed the same about Francois and have been watching him fall behind TE's and RB's in pass coverage all season. I think it was more apparent this game because Chavis wanted to work the LB's a little bit, we played a lot of 4-3 which required Francois to be in coverage as opposed to Brooks or Mathieu in our base nickel package
I agree with keeping the LB's honest with the run, however RS also keeps the LB's on their toes because he's a guy you have to cover if you see him in motion. We should be doing some fake sweep read options with sheppard just like ole miss did to us, it basically works like a triple option

LSU Storm Trooper

Posted by rami295 on 11/21/10 at 9:56 am
I've seen this guy walking around tailgates for the past 3 or 4 games. This guy has engineered a storm trooper costume that is purple and gold along with a bad arse utility belt and a cape. At the ole miss game I also happened to see this guy with ANOTHER purple and gold storm trooper. Has anyone else seen these guys because they were on TV a lot last night and if so, pictures?

He did when he repeated himself. He started off with physical, smart, and dominant then went back and said "okay so we've got physical, uh tough, smart, and dominant"

Comment on the LM Show

For those of you who watched i thought it was hilarious when someone asked les what were 3 things that described his team and he replies "physical, tough, smart, and dominant" Nevertheless i really wanted to comment on the question about mark ingram and richardson in the wildcat. Les mentioned that they basically never pass the ball out of that formation and that they have keyed into certain things on that formation. Don't get me wrong it's great for a defense to be able to key in on certain things, however is he overlooking the ole miss game from last year with the pass from mccluster? We keyed into their wildcat pretty well but then they threw the ball on us, i hope we are prepared for that situation

On the LM Show last night one of the callers asked les what were three words that could describe his team, so les proceeded in saying "we're physical, we're tough, we play smart, and we need to dominate. So again, we need to be physical, tough, smart, and dominate." Not only did he miscount and fail to mention only 3 but i don't think dominant describes this team well, and as far as the coaching staff goes, smart? Really? Come on now.

As far as our "good staff" goes CLM said it himself when asked what the staff is doing to better this team from the loss, "I don't think it's anything that we do well, our football players have character..." There you go, even les doesn't think his staff has done a great job

re: Russell Shepard hype vs. reality

Those WR screens to Shep have potential for big yardage but LM and GC designed that play to be a big fail. When JL hits shep on the screen he is usually the entire width of the field away. That's a 15-22 yard pass sideways. First off we should be throwing those passes forward for positive yardage. second of all if you're going to throw a screen to one of the most elusive players on your team, make it short and quick so he has room to run. They have to shorten up those splits if they want that screen play to work. Fact

re: Why Is Our Offense So Bad?

Posted by rami295 on 10/31/10 at 10:38 am
One thing we DEFINITELY need to be doing is running the wild cat and if you think about it, it makes loads of sense. Our wildcat package could be so diverse but we have one of the best personnel for it. You can have shep lined up at QB with ridley and ware flanking him, or RR at QB with shep and ware flanking him, or ware at QB and shep and RR flanking him. RR, Shep, and Ware played QB in high school so at minimum they know how to take snaps. Putting them in the game takes JJ and the entire QB situation out the game. We should be running this formation at least 5 times a game.

re: Our 4-2-5 Defense VS The Bama Wildcat

Posted by rami295 on 10/28/10 at 10:01 pm
We did play some 4-2-5 however our blitz schemes that everyone is referring to comes out of our mustang package which is a 3-2-6, modified version of the dime. In that package you've got
D Line- Lavar-Nevis-Adams
LB- K Shep, Baker
CB- Pat Pete, Claiborne
DB- Mathieu, Brooks
SS- Taylor
FS- Hatcher

Usually mathieu and brooks show blitz's and they toy around with those looks.
For all of you wondering about the blitz packages during the auburn game, listen to K Sheps interview, like he said himself, chief dialed up some run blitz's but everyone was shooting the gaps instead of filling them and holding their gaps, they were trying to go for big plays every time. I know no one wants to blame it on the players, hell i don't want to blame it on the players but the defensive scheme was about as good as it could have been for an offense like that. When you spread the field out like the way auburns offense does, the margin of error for the defense decreases immensely. And for all of you who are still arguing about stacking the box, there is a specific thread addressing that topic, i suggest you read it.
The man has a degree in Economics from Michigan State, you'd think he'd be able to speak better or at least anticipate that question. I think even the mighty Lesticles doesn't have the want anymore.

Last thing. How many times this year have we run a screen pass? We're dying to get the ball to our "playmakers" with a qb that has trouble with accuracy, and we haven't run a screen pass all season. How about a middle screen against the Auburn D line that was in our backfield all game. Hell, if it doesn't work, throw it away. But try it at least once.

God i was telling this to everyone i know. If the D tackles and D ends are all crashing into your back field have the QB draw them a little further back and dump off the ball to ridley/ford/ware on a screen for an easy pick up of 6-10 yards. Great point

re: Give some respect to JJ

Posted by rami295 on 10/25/10 at 8:50 am
No i'm pretty sure they gave JL the green light to run on that play. I'm pretty sure they told him the D ends were going to crash in and if he didn't see a man open to go for it. Toliver saw JL running but couldn't lay a block on his defender because his defender had his arms around Toliver's waste (defensive holding?). Anyway, either way there should have been a block there by Toliver regardless of if it's JL's nature to run or not. Furthermore the WR's should have been blocking all night. If you go back and look at the south carolina game and the state game they had great success running the ball on the outside as long as the WR's were holding their blocks.

How about the critical 4th down with blazing Jarret Lee hitting the sidelines?

Lee was trying to run behind toliver but if you go back and look at it Toliver ran his route and when he saw Lee taking off and running he totally got held by the defender and couldn't lay a block on him. Whether it was defensive holding or not i don't know but all i know it Toliver should have put a block down there as should all the wide receivers have done throughout the game!

they had a body on Kelvin Shepperd all day.

Their offensive guard number 57. They would run traps and have him on K Shep, not sure why the coaches didn't dial something up there because if a guard is pulling his gap then that A gap is open and we could have done something with that.

However, many have bought into the "myth" that to defend the spread you should stay at home, stay in your lanes, keep the play in front of you, and concede the 3 yd carry and not give up the big play. The problem with that is that you almost never hold them to 3 yds and you still give up the big play.

Yeah i mean this just goes back to with an offense like auburn you can't really STOP it. For an offense like auburns the best you can do is hold them to field goals. I'm not exactly sure why we stayed in nickle all game. We should have been running a 5-2 or a 4-4 and the entire game we had two safeties back there when we could have easily ran cover 1 and had an extra LB or CB close to the LOS. It was rather strange that the defense wasn't giving off any looks of blitzes or giving coverage looks an blitzing. I was watching film on auburn all week and if you just read the gaurd 80% of the time that is the direction of the play. Cam Newton only runs if his big buy 57 peels off and sets him a trap on the outside, i jus wasn't sure how to stop it. Bottom line, their O Line was ridiculously mobile and played all 67 snaps for auburn.

re: Stopping Newton with Sheppard

Posted by rami295 on 10/18/10 at 5:48 pm
A lot of people are saying K Shep can't handle Newton. Yes there is a huge size difference but I would put kevlin and newton on the same athletic ability level. We won't win this game with just K Shep spying on Newton. In a 1 on 1 match up K shep would get burned and trucked. We're going to have to use a 3-4 or maybe a 4-2-5. Cover 1 will help keep some DB's down low, but the game plan has to respect the rest of auburns play makers

re: Jordan Jefferson (This Year and Last)

Posted by rami295 on 10/18/10 at 5:40 pm
That's actually an interesting comment comparing Gilbert and Jefferson. Film has a lot to do with game play and it seems to be exposing JJ's weaknesses. This explains why les is limiting lee's touches as well as ford. The less these guys play come auburn, bama, and arkansas week the opposing team will slip up as far as lining up the wrong way or misreading a play.
