Always wanted an AR... which one and which options?

I really want an AR too. I'll probably get one for Christmas next year (AK this year).

I'm going to go with the .223 and probably the most basic one they have. I want a 16" barrel and I'll customize it from there.

Figuring on putting a forearm grip, picatinny rail, collapsible stock, EOTech sights, and maybe a detatchable Surefire light.

Not really a budget limitation. It would just take longer to save the money, but as a hypothetical range, call it 1200 - 2200 and see what that can get you.

I would be more inclined to set a value limitation. I wouldn't mind spending more money if the return was worth the additional investment. What's the point of buying a $4k AR when the $2k version does the same thing?

What's the arguement for getting the larger caliber?
What attachments are recommended, needed, or unnecessary?

I would use some of the money to get a .22 upper. That way you can shoot for cheap.

Save yourself $500 - 1k and build yourself one.

5.56 round just has serious limitations for any application not associated with plinking, varmints, or people.
I purchased an AR specifically for Hurricane seasons. In case of civil unrest I want a weapon that almost all LE officers will be carrying. I also chose the AR so if I am standing outside my house in Black BDUs and Black Rifle in hand, I appear to be a cop or LE to a potential Looter. Standing on your front lawn with an SKS or AK immediately identifies you as a civilian.

I like the additional range/firepower of the .308 and just consider it a more useful round for what I would ever "Need" it for.

That being said, I would most likely buy a piston action AR and not a gas impingement AR if buying an AR at this point.

I am by no means an expert on ARs though. There are several people that post on here that know much more than I do about them. When they post, you will learn much more than I can tell you about them.
Like I stated- I wouldn't even own one if not for the fear of lawlessness and desire to defend property during a hurricane or civil unrest/uprising.

I think for most people its the next step you take after owning an AR in 223. It makes you want the AR on the 308 platform.

Or if you would buy the AR in 308...you would want an AR in 223.

Close quarters type situations the 223 will do what ever it is you need it to do. If you want more long range knock down power than the 308 is where you need to start.

If i was going to buy a 308 i would look hard at the FN SCAR...

I've looked at them. I'm kindof partial to a gas piston system as opposed to the gas impingement system.

I had a Sig 556 ordered after Obama was elected but had a hard time getting one in and when it did come in it was about $300 more.

If I were buying right now I would have to look at the something shooting the 6.8. Barrett Rec 7 is an awesome system.

Also, the H&K MR556A1 would be on the list.

There are other cheaper versions as well.

sorry for my ignorance, but if i was building one, would i have to just buy an upper and lower section and combine them? would that be the basic pieces needed to build my own? thanks
