Why do people think that if there is a lockout Peterson is an LSU lock next year

That players won't get signed.... This is mainly directed towards the people who thunk pp7 is automatically staying his senior year if there is a lockout
Teams will still sign the players they want if there is. If not, there would be an overflow of players the following year. That would be a hell of a draft class if so
Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that it won't effect pp's decision to stay, but it doesn't make him a lock for LSU
Not to be a downer but it makes you look stupid when you say things like "not if there's a lockout!" when discussing the length of pp.'s tenure at LSU

I don't understand this line of thinking. if he continues to perform at the level he is now, another year at lsu would not improve his draft status.

yea i dont believe it's a lock but with a lockout there is atleast a chance he may stay.
Then again a talent like his even on a lockout year any team would love to sign him I'm sure
We were just tlaking about that with my dad and he was telling me he remembered last time there was a strike and it was all rookies playing so that may intice him even more to leave knowing he would get valuable PT in the big league to show his stuff

And there is absolutely nothing wrong with that. I believe the chances are much greater if these circumstances arise... There a a bunch of people out there that are assuming he is a lock

The NFL will have a draft next year with or without a lockout. Peterson is gone after this year as a first rounder hopefully nevis and sheppard will be there too

The whole point of a lockout is that players don't get paid during it. So, what player would sign a contract that wouldn't give him any money? If there's a real chance of the NFL season being cancelled next season, I think there's a chance these highly regarded juniors will stay. They get the chance to get a degree in the event they get hurt early in their careers and can't make enough money to retire from playing football.

Peterson signs with an agent, who fronts him lets say 500k or so to get his swag right. If you are a top ten pick this year you go...no doubt.

This is the obvious option for the juniors, but a 500K loan is a lot different from $10 million or more guaranteed.

And a year of working out and not playing football won't make him better either.

what if a rookie salary cap is implemented? is that even possible?

It's probably going to be because that is one of the players' main gripes (along with post-career healthcare). Still doesn't mean a top 10 pick like PP won't be an instant millionaire if this gets worked out before next season starts.
I still think most juniors will opt to go, but I heard Kevin Mawae say last week that his advice to juniors right now would be to stay in school unless this gets worked out because they won't get a salary next year for as long as the work stoppage lasts. Most of them will probably still listen to their agents instead, and go pro; but I wouldn't be surprised to see a few stick around.

The current collective bargaining agreement expires at the end of March, 2011. With a majority of the teams electing to decertify the Union just before this Pre-season, this positioning / posturing by the players if a new CBA cannot be reached by March is the first sign of the insuing battle. This decertification gives the players the ability to sue the teams individually. With the Union certified, suits against the owners and organizations are not allowed under collective bargaining. Given the Large disparity between Owners and the Players, everyone is posturing for the worst. This is the reason Kevin Mawae was black-balled by so many organizations and not picked up as a free agent this season, even though he was a Pro Bowl selection for 2010. As president of the NFLPA, the owners and GM's wanted nothing to do with him, given the certainty of a nasty, ugly fight on the horizon.
At issue is the perceived pay reduction the players will incur if the season is expanded from 16 to 18 games, while only reducing the pre-season from 4 games to 3. Revenue sharing and salary caps are also at issue, but not to the extent as the number of games; this is the real juggernaut.
If there is a lockout, all of the contracts between players and teams become null and void. This means none of the players are paid, and any contracts and negotiations with future players are put on hold until an agreement can be reached. With this in mind, why would any junior declare for hardship if there is a good possibility they were not going to be paid for a year?
The risk of this affecting the 2011 draft was the reason we saw so many declare for hardship this past season. I'm not saying it's a Lock for PP7 to be here next season, but it certainly is going to make this process interesting.

Uh... Contract... As in, I'll give you a certain amount of money over the corse of these years to sign with us.... Same as any other year... Minus this year of the lockout

Let's get real... If they make as little as 5mil in a couple of years... That's much more money than any degree they get (minus a few exceptions) will make in their lifetime... Get a solid 10-15 mil and they will have a set life if they live an honest life...
The better athletes arnt usually the most educated and won't benefit from a degree

Thanks for the post.
Lots of stuff I didn't know regarding the lockout.

If there is a lockout, teams (owners) don't negotiate! THey don't have a draft! THey don't work out players to draft tehm!
What F'ing point don't people get. If there is a lockout, the business is completely closed!
If WalMart would hold a lockout, they wouldn't be hiring new workers!
Get it yet?

PP is gone lockout or no lockout

Players will be drafted but NOT signed until there is a new CBA in place. This means everyone that goes out this year juniors/seniors may have to wait a while before they ever see any NFL money in the form of their draft signing bonus.
