BALTIMORE — Adrian Beltre wanted to play tonight, so he wasn’t happy when manager Terry Francona and bench coach DeMarlo Hale told him he wouldn’t be in the Red Sox’ lineup because they wanted him to rest his bruised left knee.

And if it looked like Beltre wasn’t happy last night when, after hitting a home run, Victor Martinez patted him on the head, well, he wasn’t. Beltre appeared to take a swing at Martinez, and while he said they were only fooling around, Beltre would rather Martinez come up with a different form of celebrating.

“He knows I don’t like that. I don’t like anybody to touch my head, and he knows it,” Beltre said. “He does it on purpose. So, I’m not responsible for everything that happens after that happens.”

Asked if Martinez may be rubbing Beltre’s head for luck (Martinez, of course, has been a hot hitter lately), Beltre said, “I don’t know. He’s been hitting the ball pretty good, so if that’s the case, I’ll let it go.”

And if it’s not?

“I know where to get him,” Beltre said. “He’s got a bad toe.”
