Netflix to Stream Films From Paramount, Lions Gate, MGM

quote:

In a sign that online streaming is coming to the forefront in Hollywood, films from Paramount Pictures, Lions Gate and MGM will appear on Netflix’s streaming service just three months after they appear on pay television.

In a deal announced Tuesday, Netflix will have the streaming rights to feature films like “Iron Man 2″ far earlier than it does now. It is a costly win for Netflix, which has been locking up the rights to films for its “Watch Instantly” service, which allows customers to stream content via the Internet rather than wait for a DVD to arrive in the mail.

The Los Angeles Times, which first reported the pending deal on Monday, said Netflix was expected to pay “close to $1 billion in licensing fees over the life of the deal.”

The deal will commence Sept. 1. Netflix would not confirm a report in The Los Angeles Times that the deal will last for five years.

So when is the price hike coming? Some money will be saved by cutting the cable middleman out of the equation, but a $10 all you can watch movie channel is pretty unrealistic.

i would probably be willing to pay 30-50% more than I currently do now for netflix if need be

i think its pretty much dirt cheap, especially if you are within the 1 day turnaround radius of a hub, like we are in the BR metro area

I love NetFlix if i'm in a bind but nothing beats HD content... They won't let you cache data on your PC so you are subject to shitty bandwidth. I would rather download an HD movie wait a couple hours and then comeback and watch a high res movie. Streaming is fine if you have good bandwidth though. Which most of the time traveling with my laptop via wifi I dont

this will all get better over time. they can push 100 hd channels out over my stupid comcast analog cable now..so over time netflix/etc will find better ways to improve the online/streaming experience.

just a matter of time..

eta about 50% of the netflix instant stuff i watch now is HD...

excellent news.

my breakdown--

Paramount-excellent movies, many classics.
LINK

MGM-shitty, unless serving as distributor of foreign film.
LINK

Lionsgate- new-ish, but quality

I mean I guess if you like American classic cinema. I don't, tho. Not enough cgi or t&a.

I wouldn't count on every single movie being available at the stroke of midnight Sept 1, if that is what you are asking. I'd imagine they will add them over a few months beginning on Sept 1.

Will this just be any movie that the companies did? Any limitations to which ones will become available?

Why is this a good thing ? I use Netflix for streaming TV shows, but streaming or even downloading an HD movie can't touch the picture and sound quality of Blu-Ray
