Regarding Knight's famous quote.

Yes, there was a lot of Dale Brown did wrong as a coach.

But there's something to be said for not strangling your players.

That's a lot of books too!

Great motivator? yes. Great coach? No way.

The second winningest coach in SEC history was not a great coach? Interesting.

No offense at all to Dale Brown, but have you ever heard Skip give a motivational speech? He has the ability to mesmerize an audience to the point where you want to go run through a wall for the guy.
I've heard both speak somewhat at their prime maybe Dale a little down, but never the less Dale did a much better job entertaining and was a far better business motivator in an audience composed of people from outside the state of Louisiana. Granted the average age of the audience was about mid 30's, so perhaps Skip's motivational talks would have appealed more to the younger 20 something crowd.

A very dear friend of mine was fighting cancer in about 1994. I called the Athletic Department and explained to them that my friend was sick, but that he wanted to see an LSU basketball game and needed good tickets (I offered to pay for the tickets). One day after my request I got a phone call from an assistant in the basketball office who told me that Coach Brown would like me and my friend to be his guest for the Mississippi State Basketball game. We were issued one day press passes for the game that enabled us to enter the locker room before and after the game as well as sit behind the bench during the game.

Dale took special care to spend some quality time with my friend before and after the game and ask him about his illness and his treatments. Dale signed the official scorers sheet and a program along with several other pieces of memorabilia and gave them to my friend. Each was emblazoned with some Dale Brown optimistic slogan. My buddy's wife had all of these items framed and he proudly displayed them in his home for over a year. Unfortunately, they now hang on a wall in my home.

My friend died about 18 months after this visit with Dale Brown. He was 30 year old.

Now, when I look at this framed collage of signed memorabilia, I not only think about a dear friend, I think about Dale Brown.

Was Dale a good coach? That's like asking if Mother Theresa was a good cook. Who cares?

I recall Dale taking a few minutes to talk and play with my then five year old daughter. It was really neat, and something he just did of his own accord. The kid enjoyed the attention even though she was too young to realize who was interacting with her.
