Barefoot Kickers

I'm watching the 1985 Cotton Bowl (BC vs. Houston) on CBS College Sports right now. Houston's kicker is a barefoot kicker.
I've never seen this in recent times. When did barefoot kickers become less prevalent? Is it an NCAA rule you have to wear shoes now? What's the advantage to kicking barefoot?

better feel for the ball?
I used to see this shite in high school ALL the time in the mid-90's or so. But yeah, it's pretty dead now.

In high school when I kicked I tried it. If you're kicking PATs its not too bad, and it allows you to get under the ball and get it over the line quicker (though in HS you can use the block). However if you try to smash the ball on a 50 yarder... well your foot will feel like you nailed a cinder block.
I used to wear two shoes. Metal studded Puma Kings for traction on my plan foot and some old school Adidas Predators for kicking.

Barefoot Kickers
Didn't that become big in the late 80's and fade out mid-90's?

Well I saw that kicker for Houston (85 Cotton Bowl) kick barefoot on a kickoff. Would that feel the same?

Football shoe with front toe cleat for grip and stopping, soccer cleat with no toe cleat for better kicking. Makes sense to me.

i don't see how people kick/punt a football without it stinging like hell. Maybe I just don't hit it in the right spot of my foot, but I can punt about 50 yards and kick a 40 yard fg so i don't know.

Tony Franklin...one of the best barefooters ever.

If you hit it right it doesn't hurt much. But if you midgut it...wow!! I was a straight ahead barefoot kicker. Could make them from 50 in practice and it didn't hurt anymore than a PAT.

They do it to get contact from the hardest part of foot to ball. That's why kangaroo on some diadoras and lottos are so thin. The copas are also built this way.

kicking soccer balls barefooted always fared better as well. would never play soccer barefooted though thats just asking for your feet to get stomped on
