How bout 4-7 in '83 and yes, we were that bad. Some of you just don't know...

That happened during the time right after Bo Riegn got killed and they hired Jerry Syoval on short notice. He took over in 1980 I believe and had a decent year that year but there where those like now wanted him gone. Everything was in turmoil that year in 1981 and after the next year in which LSU beat Bama and made it to the Orange Bowl against Nebraska. LSU hired Bob Brodhead and ran Jerry off after the 1982 season and hired Arnsbarger as the head coach for three years and then Mike Archer took over for a couple years and then the rest went down hill from there. Yes I was there and it was bad nothing went or could go right at all. The next year LSU built a 24 point lead at half time and ended up loosing to Tulane 31 to 28 in the rain. I know I lost an expensive new leather western hat during that rain game.

LSU had a couple of strange "off" years back then...
LSU's SEC Record
1977, 4-2
1978, 3-3
1979, 4-2
1980, 4-2
1981, 1-4-1
1982, 4-1-1
1983, 0-6
1984, 4-1-1
1985, 4-1-1
1986, 5-1
1987, 5-1
1988, 6-1
Incidentally, LSU was undefeated for its first 4 SEC games in 1980, 1982, 1984, & 1987. It hasn't happened again since.
LSU has also not gone 0-fer in the SEC since 1983.

Strange year.....LSU beats the best team from the PAC10 by a score of 40-14 while going 0-fer vs the SEC.

How can you be like 0 fer one year and win the SEC the next year and go to the Sugar Bowl. I do not know anything I understand about all of that!!!

Les Miles fault IMO.

Seems like I remember they would schedule a decent OCC team like Texas A&M for the first game of the year. If LSU won, they would go on to a great year. If they lost, the year would go downhill. My memory could be shaky from that far back though.

The difference was Bill Arnsparger.

Uncle Bill could coach, but he could not recruit (he hated it).

We never had a 24-point lead in that game.

I was there from '80 through '82. I don't recall any "turmoil". The '81 team flat out sucked. The '80 team (7-4) had alot of 3 year starters and good senior leadership. The '81 team had ZERO senior leadership....alot of good JRs who stepped up in '82 with a great freshamn class to go to 8-3-1 and the '83 Orange Bowl. Stovall was run off after the '83 season - not '82. LSU lost to Tulane in '82 in the cold rain the week after beating FSU to get the Orange Bowl invitation. The best LSU game I had ever been to followed by the worst. The '81 team just mailed it in against Tulane.

I was seven and I was there. I remember my dad saying never to forget how poorly the Tulane fans reacted to the victory.

I attended and it was the worst feeling I've ever had at a college or pro sporting event, before or since. The Tulane fans were pretty bad, but I can understand that they were letting out many, many years of frustration.
Next most distressing was the Rice game in Houston in 1980. I was working over there and had lots of family come over. Miserable weather, multiple fumbled snaps from center and a loss to the Owls. At least I didn't have to make the drive back to Buras the next day like my mom and them.

Stoval hired a 30 year old OC named Mack Brown for the 1982 season and recruited Dalton Hilliard and Gary James.
Stoval ran off Mack Brown after the '82 season because he was getting to much credit how good the team was.

That orange bowl game against nebraska is one of my favorite all time college games. Dardar kept knocking their great all american center on his azz. Hahaha. The sportcasters finally shut up about what a great cenetr he was. LSU could've, should've won that game.

'83 was by far the toughest year for me because the team had decent talent, particularly on offense where the Dalton-James gang led several future NFLers. Defensively the team was gutted with the departure of the great senior-laden group of '82 going on to the NFL and other ventures. Losing Mack Brown(yes that Mack Brown) as offensive coordiator after the '82 season also hurt. Still, the 1983 LSU Tigers have got to be in the running as the most talented team(especially offensively)to go winless in the SEC.
