In the PRCA they always talked about the TRY! If the cowboy had enough TRY in him. Just about the same thing. Miles should have picked that up from his coaching the Cowboys!

Curiosity about "The Want"
Those of us whose first language is English understand that "want" means the same as such words as "desire". If Les had said that the team had a desire to win, would your panties still be in a bunch?
Go out into the real world and listen. I'll bet you will hear lots and lots and lots of English words you don't know. Just ask your mommy to explain them to you.

I know you think you're being clever, but you are just being an arse.

Seriously, I am curious if it is some sort of regional or cultural thing. Like "howdy" is a term you'd never hear from a Bostonian or New Yorker, by might hear from the Old South (it being a contraction first identified there). FYI, "howdy" was first recorded in the 1600s.

You might think Confederates used the term "y'all", but according to eymology dictionary it was first recorded in 1909.

I know folks use "want", I do to. I used to tell my kids when they were little, "You can want what you want, but you're going to get what you're going to get."

But I never heard "the want" until Les.

And until Friday many of the tards had never heard the word acclimization, that doesn't make Les stupid, it makes his critics illiterate.

the want
the desire
the will

it's all the same and it's all proper english.

Les is far more intelligent and far more accomplished than the VAST majority of his critics.

I find it laughable that LSU fans, who are predominately from the most illiterate and backward speaking (I know, I are one) region on the planet criticize this man over the proper use of words just because they are not familiar with the application...

i posted about the word assimilazation and after two pages, the powers to be on this board chose to whack the thread. i spelled it like i heard it "assimilzation". i have a masters degree in education and i have a good friend who is a vet. he and his wife, who also has a post sec degree, could not recall such a word. the word southern man chose, acclimaztion, is a form of the word acclimate (ak'le mate) and that is the way it is pronounced (ak'le ma shun). les did not pronounce it that way, therefore we did not know what he was talking about. had he used the word correctly, maybe we would know exactly what he was trying to say. it doesn't make me or anyone else retarded and i resent such a claim. it just makes me wonder what the hell les is trying to say. and it makes people who present the word acclimization as the word he said blind fools. that is not the word he used!

I just had to let that quote live on. Too good to forget!

I've traveled a lot with the military and never heard "the Want" used as Miles does FWIW.

Miles uses the English language in a retarded manor...just like you a-hole.
I have been out in the "real world" for a very long time and no one I have ever come in contact with using "want" in that way. Again, it is fricked up just like your moronic defense of it.

Now go out in your tiny little world and do what tiny little people do.

So let me see if I understand you. Just because YOU have never heard of an expression, it is retarded? Now I really need to know who made YOU the retardation expert? What makes YOU the final arbiter of the proper use of English? How did YOU rise to that postion?

Oh yes, Mr. I AM THE WORLD WIDE ENGLISH EXPERT, the proper word is manner not manor.. But thanks for posting. Now it's time for you to get back to the slide and the sand pile.

And that makes it wrong? Just because you never heard of it. I personally know of hundreds of people who have never heard of the term "fixin'to" but does that make people that use it retarded?

No offense to you and your master's degree but you are either deaf, lying or received your degree from gumpU.

Les did not say 'assimilzation' or assimilation (which is also a word) he said acclimization and he said it fine.

When people, not dissimilar to yourself, claim intellectual superiority based on degrees and pedigree it makes you look petty and small.

When you are DEAD wrong in your criticism and claim he made up a word simply because you and your uppity friends didn't recognize it you look, well, stupid.

Have a great day!

"The want" is a common phrase in the upper levels of management. I'm sure it was coined from some motivational speaker.

I stand corrected...I screwed up and hit the wrong word while using spell check. I will learn from this experience and attempt to not do it again.

That is what intellegent people do...unlike you and your idiot hero.

Is it a regional thing? Do other people use it?

I have the want to know about "the want."

that means you haven't read any college level literature. it's a pretty standard word.

The pair of words in question is one of hundreds of idiotic things that come out of the man's mouth on a regular basis. What the frick is wrong with you?

You seem to be able to read, at least on a third grade level, so I guess you must have an audible comprehension issue.

Here you go fricktard, read what is on this site and you might find the help you need to hear what the rest of us hear:

LINK

If not, you are just as fricked up as Miles, so enjoy the bliss that is your ignorance you tiny little man...

Amazing. I ask a simple civil question and folks gratuitously try to sling insults, ill-founded ones at that.

BTW Hitchdick, while "want" may be a standard word, "the want" isn't a common phrase.

It seems no-one know the etymology of the phrase or if it has any regional or cultural association. However if someone does, I'd appreciate your sharing the knowledge.

Thanks.
