But the noun version of "want" means "an absence or lack of."
according to dictionary.com, one meaning of the noun version is...

something desired, demanded, or required
any ways...who gives a shite? we all know what he means. It's ironic the bitching about this when we are all tied to an area of the country that uses a ton of phrases that are completely out of bounds in the English language. Reminds me of the old joke, what's the definition of a cajun? A person who's illiterate in 2 languages.
edited to add...from the thesaurus on reference.com
Main Entry: want
Part of Speech: noun
Definition: desire
Synonyms: appetite, craving, demand, fancy, hankering, hunger, longing, necessity, need, requirement, thirst, wish, yearning, yen
Notes: wont is a custom, especially habitual; want is a desire or need
Antonyms: disinterest, dislike, hate

as in....there is a notable want for a running game this season.
Which would be correct if Miles was saying that our running game was lacking, but he uses the term to describe desire. He'll often say "there is a want to compete." I seriously doubt he is trying to express the idea that his team lacks competitive drive. He is trying to say that the team desires to compete. Which is all fine and dandy, but want (in its noun form) isn't the correct term to use.

Correct
It may be unique, but it's also incorrect.

I do not. I just want him to win games because there is a want of victories lately.
See what I did there?
Anyway, just trying to point out the misusage so posters don't make the same mistake.

All I can say is, as far as the English language goes, Merriam-Webster's trumps other sources, especially "dictionary.com."
I don't think the good people in succession of Daniel Webster purposefully left out the "a desire" definition so that dictionary.com could claim it.

Your anger toward Les for whatever reason (saban separation anxiety, lack of personal self esteem or jealousy) is unhealthy.

Is it a regional thing? Do other people use it?
I have the want to know about "the want."

"It's a want that you have."

the esteemed Roget includes the following as synonyms for the noun version of "want" in my tattered 1978 version of his thesaurus...
wish, desire, requirement (DESIRE)
along with the absence and poverty references.
on page 1330 of my 10th Edition M-W Collegiate Edition, the second meaning of the noun "want" is...
2. something wanted, NEED, DESIRE
I guess somewhere old Daniel is probably rolling over in his grave over the blaspheme of this being included in the 10th edition.

No kidding...I went to Bolton quite a few years ago. It has been a long time since I have lived in the area. I was there a year or so ago and other than a few new stores sprinkled around, it has not changed very much.
