I had never heard that phrase until Les uttered it.

Is it a regional thing? Do other people use it?

I have the want to know about "the want."

It is used quite often in terms of having the desire to do something. Les Miles is far from the first to use this term to describe having that desire.

Those of us whose first language is English understand that "want" means the same as such words as "desire". If Les had said that the team had a desire to win, would your panties still be in a bunch?
Go out into the real world and listen. I'll bet you will hear lots and lots and lots of English words you don't know. Just ask your mommy to explain them to you.

i had a coach that said "you can want in one hand, and crap in another, at least you have something in the hand full of crap". in other words, wanting something doesn't mean crap unless you put in the work to achieve stated goals. to say you want something is not enough, you should put in the time and hardwork to reach a goal. LSU had the "want" to get that final play off at ole miss, but players were running around and couldn't get lined up, so time ran out. now, we are working on the two minute offense everyday in practice, per les miles. the want is not enough....work,work,and more work is the answer to not finishing second in a game.

I lived up north for a while, and they'd never heard the phrase "fixin to". I was totally surprised...they also hadn't heard "pert near" or "your mama an'em"

his use of "the want" is his way of saying the team is focused on achieving that goal, it is different from "we want"

actually it's not, and Les has been criticized for over-working the team trying to fix problems, thus wearing them out. He needs to realize there are certain things that work can't overcome, and move to a different strategy. I can't hit a driver 340, and how hard I work at it will never change that.

Technically you can work on your technique.

But I got what you're saying and I like that analogy

Don't you all think that the team having "the want" is kind of goes without saying though? Should that really have to be said?

How many teams "don't want" going into early fall camp?

I've always thought that was kind of a CYA term that Miles reaches for time and time again.

"We didn't win but we sure wanted to..."

It's a weasel word any way you look at it. Little leaguers "want" to win, their mommy's want them to win.

Professionals, adults and major CFB programs don't "want" anything, they expect to win and have confidence that they WILL win.

Miles uses the English language in a retarded manor...just like you a-hole.

I have been out in the "real world" for a very long time and no one I have ever come in contact with using "want" in that way. Again, it is fricked up just like your moronic defense of it.

Now go out in your tiny little world and do what tiny little people do.

You're being ridiculous to the OP. I am a huge literary junkie and a casual observor of the English language, and I also have been very curious about Mile's language styles. Michigan is one of the only states in America that I haven't set foot in, so I too am curious as to whether the way Miles talks is a regional thing.

Miles is from Ohio...and by and large, people from that state don't talk like an idiot.
