Chinese Food Complaint

Something that I have noticed the last few times that I have gone to eat Chinese at a few different places in the area - when did they stop making the dishes that are supposed to be spicy actually spicy? The last few times I have ordered Kung Pao Chicken (which is supposed to be hot), it barely had any kick at all. Then last night I ordered a Szechuan (sp?) dish advertised as being spicy and it was bland as hell.
What gives? Is this because idiot customers were ordering spicy food and then complaining about it? What is really sad is that recently the best Kung Pao that I've had was at a fricking Panda Express in Las Vegas. Now that had some heat on it.
Has anyone else noticed this or is it just the few restaurants that I have been going to?

My only complaints about Chinese food are that it makes me fat and lowers my life expectancy.
It so damn good though...

If I'm going to a Chinese place for the 1st time I'll ask them how spicy they make their dishes whenever I'm ordering. The place I go to regularly out here I let them no how spicy I want my dish and it's never a problem.

Sirachi pepper sauce has killed Chinese food

Don't get me wrong; I like the taste of Sirachi, but I feel it is overly used in Chinese Dishes. I prefer dried chili peppers and some chili paste. Just my opinion

I just ask them to make it extra spicy and I never have a problem. When I don't remember to make the request however, it does tend to be blander than I expect

Gotcha. Yeah I prefer when the actual peppers are used as well to add the spice. Problem is apparently if you don't request it they won't use either.

If you're looking for HOT as FRICK Asian food, I had the Spicy Basil Noodles ( I think that's the right name) at Duang Tawan (Sherwood Forest). I asked for it "one notch below Thai hot." I ate it, and it was like getting slapped in the face with every bite.
The noodles soaked up all of the chili oils - I mean, the dish didn't LOOK particularly hot (no sign of redness or pepper seeds) but OH MY GOD IT HURT!
Try it if you want something different, or if you are looking to relieve any sinus pressure you are experiencing.

The stuff all comes premade from the same warehouse in Houston is my theory.

Same problem with Tex-Mex, blanded for the masses.

Chinese Combo King uses real pepper and pepper oils. They are a cut above the troughs. Very nice people as well.

This is true. I ordered a curry medium hot last time and was blasted out. I loved it. Hubby and friends didn't ask for a second taste, though! And I had the leftovers all to myself.

Is that hole in the wall little joint still open on Sherwood Forest? I think that it's on the corner of Sherwood and Old Hammond. I've never been because the exterior of the place didn't look good at all. I forgot the name but I think that it may have been China King. I amazed me how people frequented that place. Whenever I used to pass by that place during lunch time, that place was always packed. Did I miss a hidden jewel by not eating at that place?

You speak of Egg Roll King. I think its a front for the Chinese mafia

Yeah, that's it, Egg Roll King. I always wondered how that place stayed in business because it sure as hell doesn't look like the cleanest place in town. I wonder if the owners of that place are the ones who go to the Baton Rouge animal shelter once a month and adopt about twenty-five cats and dogs.

I dare to step foot in that place, but it has been there forever. Something aint right

I have always wondered why it had lasted so long with its rundown appearance, so I figured, maybe the food is real good. This type of screwed up logic has gotten me in more trouble than motel receipts left in the glove compartment.
But a few months ago curiosity got the best of me and I pulled in their drive-thru and ordered the lo mein, allegedly the chicken lo mein. I can't remember how much it cost, but I thought it was pretty cheap. I took it home and dove in, it wasn't the best I've had, but it was far from the worst.
My theory is that they serve OK Chinese at a low price and the lease on that building can't be much. Hence, they aren't getting rich, but it's a living.
