Think about this for a minute.
Mankind can start a drill a mile under the ocean that extends for another 5-6 miles below that.
And when it blows with a force of 7-8 thousand psi, can cap it. A mile underwater.
Yes, we'd all rather the need for it not have been necessary, but it's still pretty incredible.
Even one generation ago that would have been in the realm of science fiction.

what is even more incredible to me is the relief wells are aiming for a spot in the earth about 3ftx3ft
from miles away through thousands of feet or rock

That is pretty amazing!
I am actually impressed that they capped it and I hope the spill ends up not being too bad on the environment.
I still am of the opinion that drilling for oil beats the shite out of walking.

During the hearing the other day one of the Oceaneering guys said 'everyone keeps comparing this to Valdez. But in reality this is closer to Apollo 13".

Straight out of my daughters mouth, she is eight. We are living in the future!

BALDERDASH!!!
Clearly this industry has no idea what it's doing!!!! Bunch of ignorant redneck hillbillies poking holes in the ground with sticks and running around to catch the oil that spews out in buckets, leaving the excess to run into the streams!!!
HARUMPH!!!

Seriously! Dude. I am going to take a WAG that you have never been on a drilling rig. That kind of language in the oil patch would have gotten you thrown in the Gulf.

I don't really see a valid comparision between a trip to the moon and the BP disaster, except that both had explosions that resulted in failure of their original goals.
Equating the technology involved in flying to the moon with the technology involved in remediating a failed deep well? No way, notwithstanding that this well's consequences will continue to adversely impact the people, economy, and ecology of the Gulf for who knows how long.
And I don't mean to degrade in any way the hard difficult work and innovation displayed by all those involved in the oil business. How and what they are apparently accomplishing is way over my head. I'm just pointing out that, to use an overused phrase, it ain't rocket science.

Only accurate statement in your post.

I know "Rocket Scientists" (Soon to be Unemployed Rocket Scientists at NASA) and they are way overrated by the general public.

No problem with that, but my opinion was directed to the science, not the scientist. There is a difference.

Someone needs to get his sarcasm meter checked.

I believe his point was that they are doing things in a non-human environment on the fly. And some of the solutions to new arising issues are being made on the fly and under the gun.
Either that, or they stopped that thing with duct tape.....

LMAO at myself. OK, I was a little slow on that one. Thanks for tuning me up. Damn.

NASA purchases quite a bit of unmanned robotics from Oceaneering. So in a sense, what's been going on is rocket science.

Most of the comparison is working in that depth of water and working in space. The same type of tools are used in both cases. That is why we at Oceaneering have a very profitable Space Division located in Houston. NASA approached our Deepwater Technical Solutions Divisions years ago about building some tools to be used in space, and we have had a great working relationship since.

You should check out the Oceaneering website at the Robonaut 2 that we just designed. It's pretty amazing what that thing can do.

NASA also had two refrigerator/freezers built by Oceaneering on board ISS. They've since been de-manifested due to failures but it wasn't bad engineering as much as it was due to corrosion on the TEDs (Thermo Electric Devices).
We will have a Robonaut on ISS soon...is that made by Oceaneering?
BTW..this NASA contractor still has his job...unaffected by the present Administration!!!
