Just looked at the active roster. Seems we only have three linebackers that have ever seen the field. Shepherd and Baker with the only significant experience. Lots of redshirts and true freshman. Are we in trouble?????

Nah. Chavis is a LB guru. He will have the RS ready.
Plus he has Maclin coming in who should be the next great one at LSU.

With a dominant D-line stringing runs out, they don't have to be outstanding. All they have to do is wrap up and be sure tacklers aka follow the sherrif

Admins will continue to delete any posts which mention it until it becomes official.

after the spring game, this is what I'm most worried about. on the other hand, it gave Chavis something to focus on. hopefully he'll have em ready to go by 9/4.

There are sufficient numbers and lots of talent. Francois isn't exactly a rookie, so that at least gives us a third body for calming purposes, should a green kid have to come in early and under duress.
I'm excited to see what the young LBs can do, particularly Kevin Minter, Tahj Jones, Lamin Barrow and Josh Johns who will comprise the backups.
If we suffer a major injury in fall camp or very early, I think Justin Maclin might play as a true freshman. I can't help but compare him to Bradie James coming out of HS, though he may outgrow the LB position.

Chavis loves a DL which ties up the blockers and feeds the ball carriers to steady LBs.
The problem we had LY was our DL was undermanned. Hopefully it's a much stronger position this season.

This was the smallest pic I could find

yeah I know, but it almost looks like our personnel this year is more geared toward penetrating 1 gappers in the Lav/ Dorsey/ Kyle Williams mode. I'm talking Nevis, Downs, and (potentially) JC Copeland. if anything last yr's starting DTs lent themselves more to be like the big boys Chavis tended to have at UT. he might need to let the 2010 line go all Mahelona on a bitch. we'll see soon.

Baker will be beastly IMO. I am predicting him to be one of our breakout players of the year.

Considering how well Coleman did last year when pressed into duty as a linebacker, Chavis has earned the benefit of the doubt regarding talented players who have never played LB before. I'm not worried about it, especially with Sheppard out there.

If the linebacking corpse is good enough that Kevin Mentor is second string then no one should be worried. I will be more than surprised if he is not the starter this year.

No, they are not dominant but we have 5-6 bodies (Nevis, Pep, Brockers, Downs, Davenport, Logan or Freshmen) whereas last year we had 3-4 (Nevis, Woods, Alexander, Downs as True Fresh), so they should be fresher throughout the game.
This LB corps will have tremendous speed. What they lack in size to take on blockers they can run around them and get to the position to make plays faster.

I agree. On special teams, he either made the tackle on kickoffs or he assisted in making the tackle. Always around the football.

My worry with the LBs is that they are too light in the britches. I hope at 210 lbs they are physical enough to take on 225 lb RBs all season long. Can anyone point out to me any recent, dominant SEC LBs that weighed around 210?

of the three that ran first team in spring game and on the depth chart...he, Francois, is the one that is not a lock to start..

K Sheppard 239
R Baker 225
S Francois 225
K Minter 240
L Barrow 227
J Johns 215
T Jones 205
and then the TRUE freshman...

Come on now. They're not THAT bad.

There are projections of him as a pass rushing DE based on his frame. If he redshirts, I think they will know by spring ball if he is going to be a small, quick DE, or a monster OLB.

That's true, but, again, it is comforting to know if you have an early injury, that you have a second guy that has played enough and been around to calm everybody down (me included).
And I agree that the LB weights are good, especially in Chavis' system. The young guys have good size for their age.

KMinter will fill this role very soon.

Maclin and Mingo on the outside and Minter in the middle. Talk about a beast LB corp
