Went Fishing Out of Fourchon This Weekend

We left early in the morning, 3 AM, and headed out for a great day of spearfishing. Got to the platform around 8:30 and started diving. Flat calm seas, not a cloud in the sky! We hit 3 platforms before we lost our port engine and had to head back in on only one. 8 hour trip home! Not the way we expected it to go
The water was really murky, from the storms recently I'm guessing. The rigs were full of life! Snapper and bait fish everywhere!!
We did see some surface oil sheens on the way in. Really depressing to see. About 10 miles or so thick. (25-15 miles from land) This wansn't thick black sheen, just the orange streaky like oil. Very dialouted but still visable.
There was a southern rip line preventing the oil from moving further south and the sothern flow of the river was preventing it from going inland.
It was very lifless while we traveled through that area. But outside the oil area, we saw more bait fish and action than ever before. This is exactly what i though was going to happen. The fish all moved away from the oiled waters.
We didnt see a single dead fish/bird! We did get to see two huge beautiful sea turtles though! We passed right on the side of them, they're amazing to see upclose!
Another boat we out for a 2 night 2 day dive trip and they loaded the boat! So far, from talking to other divers the fish population has esclated if anything.. We are still to see what the long term effects are but as of now, things are looking up!
We made 2 dives in the closed fishing zone and saw the same thing, plenty plenty fish and bait.
The other guys trip, hats off to them! 110 lb Amberjack and 55 lb Cubera Snapper!!

Not suprising, but you surely won't hear this reported by anyone. It would ruin the perception they have been portraying to the public.
Good post!

That cubera may be a record fish. Snapper usually don't get above that 50 lb mark.
ETA: Did ya'll go way out west?

Great Post.
I had a similar experience inland at Grand Isle 4th of July weekend, but not as many pounds of fish.
We did catch speckled trout and a nice drum. Pogies were easy to catch, no oiled birds, no dead fish, lot of porpoises and pelicans.
You would think the gulf and the estuaries were dead if you believed Katie Couric.

With the weekend I had, you would have lost all of them...in the water...with no way to get back to shore because your radios went out also.
See what I mean?

Did oil get in the intake? What happened to engine?
Secondly, no one ever thought the population would go down over 100 miles out. Don't forget what these guys eat. The bait was further out and the populations were more dense further out. Makes sense to me. The spill is basically 50 miles out and in to the land. Why didn't you plan the trip there?
I'm not saying total doom and gloom bs at all. I'm just saying if you are over 50 miles out, you may as well have been in S America.
I spearfish alot and looks as though yall were on the way to a tremendous trip before the troubles. Sorry to hear that and great news about the numbers of fish. It's just too early for any conclusion, good or bad.
