Recently released by Criterion Collection on Blu-Ray Walkabout is the work of cinematographer turned director Nicolas Roeg who parctically invented the MTV style of editing with quick cuts, interlaced images, stills, overlapping sound takes, extreme close ups and far reaching wide shots, etc. Though Roeg movies are mostly told through images with minimal dialog I'm not sure if they would appeal to MTV audiences.
Walkabout is a story of a young attractive teenage girl and her little brother whom are stranded out in the Australian outback by their father left to their own devices to find there way back to civilization come to the brink before being found by a young teenage Aborigine who's out on his walkabout(a right of passage for Aboriginal guys whom are coming of age). They cannot communicate verbally but the trio form an unspoken friendship.
Nicolas Roeg is also known for his extreme sex scenes most notorious of which being Donald Sutherland & Julie Christie in the horror/thriller Don't Look Now. Walkabout doesn't have any sex scenes but it does contain nudity but still is Roeg's most accessible movie.
A really beautifully done movie about life & death, youth & innocence and the power of communication.

That's why I have 1971 in parentheses.

It's a very simple movie. I loved the scenery and lack of conversation.

Hmmm... Jean-Luc Goddard might have something to say about this.
Roeg is a weird dude, with some really hit or miss movies. Have you seen Track 29? Crazy shite.

Sure if I was only talking about jump cuts but you left off the rest of my quote where I reference Roeg's other editing technics.

Naw haven't seen that one. I've only seen four of his movies so far. Performance, Bad Timing, Don't Look Now & Walkabout. I liked all four.

I guess I should have used the phrase "one of the early pioneers of the MTV style of editing..."
