D Line Ranking

No big arguments from me...
8. New Orleans Saints: The Saints don’t have one defensive lineman who makes you say “wow,” but they have a lot of very good players, such as end Will Smith(notes), tackle Sedrick Ellis(notes) and versatile backup Anthony Hargrove(notes). The group is diverse enough that defensive coordinator Gregg Williams felt comfortable using a lot of 3-4 looks in the Super Bowl. Former Bears end Alex Brown(notes) joins the defending champs this season, replacing Bobby McCray(notes), and should be a moderate upgrade.
14. Atlanta Falcons: End John Abraham(notes) is not quite what he used to be, but he’s still a great speed rusher off the edge. The problem is that the Falcons don’t have enough interior help to get Abraham into more pass-rush situations. That was particularly true after they lost rookie tackle Peria Jerry(notes) last year to injury. If Jerry returns, he makes everybody better, even end Jamaal Anderson(notes), a guy who is keeping his head just barely above water. Barely!
18. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: OK, I have to admit right from the start that the Bucs don’t have an end who is worth mentioning (they have placeholders in Tim Crowder(notes) and Stylez G White(notes)), but you have to love what the Bucs did with their first two picks in the draft, taking tackle Gerald McCoy(notes) and then following up with Brian Price(notes). If they can milk another year out of veteran Chris Hovan(notes), at least the Bucs won’t get run over and through as they did last season (league-worst 158.2 yards per game). Furthermore, McCoy may have Warren Sapp(notes)-like impact in that he could make those around him much better, making it easier to find good ends.
32. Carolina Panthers: How the mighty have fallen. A few years ago, the Panthers had a brutally tough line featuring Julius Peppers and Kris Jenkins. No, they have try-hard guy Tyler Brayton(notes) to go with a bunch of JAGs (Just A Guy) like Nick Hayden(notes), Louis Leonard(notes) and Everette Brown(notes). Rookie Greg Hardy(notes) has potential, but he needs to get his head on straight.

That is a pretty good ranking for a D-line which I think is one of the weaker parts of our team.

No way we have the #8 DL. Our DEs are solid, but our DTs have to be amongst the worst in the league.

I'd call that the bottom 10%. Let's compare the bottom 4 in his rankings-
Carolina: Hayden-Leonard
Seattle: Mebane-Cole
Tenn: Jones-Haye
Cleve: Danso-Adams
I take Ellis-Ayodele over any of those tandems. That's not factoring Hargrove into the rotation. Woods or Jay Ross might make the team and bring improvement too.
DT is not a strength fo sho. Less than average still isn't among the worst to me though.

Yeah 8 seems kind of high, though I wonder how their stats look if you remove the 1st quarter stats. They seemed to play better as games went on.

A lot of national writers stay a couple of years behind. Many just regurgitate old stuff. I'm often wowed by how little some of the bigger names actually know.

Those D-line rankings look pretty fair to me. Giants underperformed last season but that was due to new D coach. Saints D deserves to be up there if you think otherwise you better watch your team a little better. Plus you added some new guys to your rotation.

We had the sixth most passing attempts against per game + we blitzed second most out of all teams and we finished 13th in sacks. GW himself said our DL isn't good enough to get pressure without blitzing.
As for run defense, we had the 5th worst ypc against. That pretty much speaks for itself.
No, but he's only had one season that I would say he played well in (rookie year) and he's certainly below average until he shows me otherwise. Ayodele may very well be THE worst starting DT in the NFL, though. Hargrove is a solid pass rushing DT. Woods wasn't a great college player and we have no reason to believe he will be a very good pro. So yeah, we have a bottom 5 or so DT corps.

Saints at 8, dude is smokin some serious shite and should share, they have a solid DE and DT backed up by a solid passrushing specialist DT that is weak against the run. Everyone else is replacement players.

I say let's see what he does before we throw him under the bus.
The ranking seems a bit high if you ask me, and GW comes from a Buddy Ryan background. If we had the number 1 ranked DL, or anything close to great, he'd still be blitzing. Whether he'd have to do it as much, maybe not. But I think GW has a hate for QBs :)
