You can argue that historically they have a better hoops history than Texas.
There really isn't an argument.
True, it's not. Houston with the right coach overtakes TX again and can become a relevant in basketball again.

I bet most of you didn't know this but when Arkansas left the SWC, Houston was the only SWC team with a winning record against Arkansas in Basketball.

I think the Big-12 thinks Houston is already covered by the combination of UT and A&M, especially with A&M just north of there. It sounds like the same logic is applied to TCU in the Dallas market.

Don't misunderstand me, I'd rather play LSU every year. My GF is an LSU grad.

Baloo is right, this is more about the attempt to elevate UH to the academic status as UT and TAMU. The TX legislature has just approved for UH to become a tier 1 university. UH has had a reputation as "Houston High", but they have actually become very competitive academically and are looking to add increase endowment funds for research and new programs. The new president of UH seems to recognize that most tier 1 schools have big time athletic programs and that the attention that comes from that helps tremendously with fund raising. She is sincere in raising the standards of UH athletics as evidenced by the new stadium and arena plans. The politicians in favor of UH gaining tier 1 status also realize this. It's not all about TV revenue. There is at least a logical argument that UH could benefit the Big 12(10+2) since their new investments in athletics along with the prestige of the Big 12 "could" wake the sleeping giant which is the huge UH alumni base. UH is the 3rd biggest university in Texas but does not currently motivate its fans.

Hogeb,
Thanks for the props! Evidently the UH president is meeting with the UT president today.

This whole deal is another example of media trying to be the tail that wags the dog. Houston media reports on a story with basically no chance of happening. Others report on the Houston media reporting on this, then Houston media uses that to validate their initial reports.
Bottom line: College Station is an hour away from houston. There is zero reason for the Tiny 10 Conference (Big12-2) to add a school like Houston High that adds very little national attention to the conference and is in an already Tiny-10 saturated TV market.
They'll add TCU, SMU, Texas State, UTEP, or even Texas Women's before they add UH.
