The U.S. Government has apparently reconsidered a Dutch offer to supply 4 oil skimmers. These are large arms that are attached to oil tankers that pump oil and water from the surface of the ocean into the tanker. Water pumped into the tanker will settle to the bottom of the tanker and is then pumped back into the ocean to make room for more oil. Each system will collect 5,000 tons of oil each day.

The Dutch offered to fly their skimmer arm systems to the Gulf 3 days after the oil spill started. The offer was apparently turned down because EPA regulations do not allow water with oil to be pumped back into the ocean. I

Only oil mixed with dispersants is allowed to be pumped into the GOM, duh

Wait they did have this technology availible the whole time?
My dad had mentioned something like this but I thought it was a "drawing on a napkin" kind of thing.
Onama really dropped the ball on this.

I posted this awhile back. Official government to government offer rejected based on EPA saying the vessels would not be permitted to discharge the seawater that had just been skimmed and the vast majority of the oil removed from. Right up there with the COE delaying approval of the sand berms to study the environmental impacts while the oil was soiling the marshes. Idiots.

I know the Obama administration said no. I do not know what BP's thoughts were on the subject.

Did BP even admit to oil leaking by day 3?

For what? Government incompetence? I have news for you. That is the rule not the exception.

They were not even consulted. Vilify BP for many things, but not this one. This is a great example of much that is wrong with this country. Rules and regulations that totally abandon common sense.

if this spill had happened near a third world country we would have sent the navy, coast guard and national guard and the problem would have been solved.

It was due to some Act that protected American union workers and Obama didn't want to insult them.

It's called the Jones Act. This Act was put in place around the 1920's to protect the unions. All the Moron in Chief had to do was sign an Executive Order to temporarily lift the restrictions of the Jones Act.
Bush did this during Katrina.
As far as I know the Jones Act still has not been repealed or lifted.
When the Dutch offered the skimmers he should have been on the phone getting every skimmer on the planet in the Gulf. But he said , "No thanks."
The oil leak is not his fault, but the response is. He had a chance to save the wetlands by using these skimmers, and getting more. He did not. Now we have a catastrophe. The Moron In Cheif is clearly in over his head. Where are all of the people saying how brilliant he is.
He may be an "intellectual", but he has no common sense, and has no wisdom.
The only thing he is good at is blaming people.
He needs to get the skimmers 57 days ago, and instruct BP to order more skimmer arms, and retrofit some existing tankers with those arms. We could have 50 skimmers in the GOM depending on how many arms are available.
For oil underwater we need to get some longer arms and use robotic submarines to guide the arms.
