Big 10 Divisional Split?

How will the Big 10 split geographically? Logical assumption is into East and West Divisions. The state of Indiana is centered right in the middle. But if split geographically down the middle, the balance of power is really tilted to the East. It may be divided randomly like ACC, because if divided geographically:
East
Penn State
Ohio State
Michigan
Michigan State
Purdue
Indiana
West
Northwestern
Illinois
Wisconsin
Iowa
Minnesota
Nebraska
You could almost pen in Nebraska in the Big-10 championship game on a yearly basis under this scenario.

yeah, they cant do it geographically.
no way you can have those 3 powerhouses in the same east division, and leave nothing for the west.
the west might still be stronger than most of the Big 12 though!

I'm not sure that it has anything to do with it, but of the 3 major conferences that had a CG, 2 were geographically split and 1 was not. That 1 has been much less successful than the other two in terms of getting teams to the NCG.
This is assuming they even create divisions and have a conference championship game.

No way they divide geographically. 3 out of Penn State, Ohio State, Michigan, and Nebraska will not be in the same division. My best guess:
Division 1:
Ohio State
Michigan
Michigan State
Illinois
Northwestern
Purdue
Division 2:
Penn State
Nebraska
Iowa
Wisconsin
Minnesota
Indiana
Division 1:
Ohio State
Michigan
Michigan State
Illinois
Northwestern
Purdue
Division 2:
Penn State
Nebraska
Iowa
Wisconsin
Minnesota
Indiana

The Big 12 CG was a joke and rarely helped a team get to the NCG. The SEC's works but then again spiting it geographically does a really good job of evenly dividing the top 6 teams in conference in terms of overall wins (Technically Arkansas has more wins than Florida but in terms of recent wining percentage it makes sense).

When they were trying to invite ND in the late 90s, the Big 10 (with 12 teams) was going to divide the conference by lands and lakes... So you would have the Big 10 Lands division and Big 10 Lakes division... based upon their promixity to the Great Lakes.
Not sure if they will still try and do that or not.

No. You really couldn't. But I think the "east" winner would always win the championship game.

I've got to think that having a Big 10 Championship Game is a certainty. It was a driving force behind going to 12 teams and also eliminating the long lay-off of teams before the NC game.
ACC by far seems to have the worst championship game. Fans have to travel long distances and attendance has been so bad that TV avoids aerial shots.
Again, geographically, I'll be curious to see where they play a Big 10 championship game. Indoor stadiums will be important, so best guesses would be Detroit or Indianapolis, if they try to stay neutral.

Lucas Oil Stadium. I'm fairly certain of that - Big10 has a good relationship with the city since they host our basketball tournament. Other possibility would be to use Soldier Field in Chicago. I'd be shocked if it was in Detroit.

I think Wisconsin diagrees with on Nebraska domination and Iowa.

The East/West split makes the most sense geographically, but the East would be much stronger in both football and basketball (traditionally). I think they should do it that way just because I'm a pretty big football fan, and I have no idea who is in which ACC division. Apply geographic logic to make it easy for outsiders to understand.
Besides, Nebraska, Iowa, and Wisconsin are hardly chumps. And it would give huge meaning to the OSU-Michigan game at the end of the year (assuming UM gets back to being good)

i like the geographical divisions. Iowa v. Nebraska could develop into quite the rivalry pretty soon...

almost?
IOWA is going to start the season ranked #8.
All the teams in the new b10 west have won the Big Ten in the past.
Did Iowa State or K State ever win the B12?

they will eventually and what better way than to start 2011 with a new coach, maybe a Michigan man that has won a BCS Title.

just another suggestion...
north
penn st
minnesota
michigan
michigan st
wisconsin
northwestern
south
illinois
iowa
ohio state
nebraska
indiana
purdue
if you have a big six like you do in the sec, you can at least split (osu, nebraska, iowa) on one side and (PSU, Mich, wisc) on the other.
i would also say that mich st and illinois balance each other out.

Wishful thinking.

Put OSU and Mich in the same division.
