House Bill 303 has passed both the House and Senate and is heading back to the house for concurrence. If signed by Gov. Jindal or allowed to become law without his signature, home-schooled students will be able to participate in sports at LHSAA public or private schools.
Henry HB No. 303
Abstract: Provides relative to eligibility of students in state-approved home study programs
to participate in interscholastic athletics at high schools that are members of the
LHSAA. Provides guidelines, procedures, and limitations relative to such
participation.
Proposed law provides (beginning with the 2010-2011 school year and continuing thereafter)
that a student participating in a home study program approved by the State Board of
Elementary and Secondary Education (BESE) in accordance with R.S. 17:236.1 shall be
eligible as follows to participate in interscholastic athletic activities at a high school that is
a member of the Louisiana High School Athletic Association (LHSAA):

This is plain stupid. If the kids' parents want to homeschool them, they don't need to play on teams for organized high schools. Start a homeschool team. There are several issues with this including not being able to legitimize their scores and grades to be equal to other students.
Also, its not fair to the kids in that school trying to make the team.

I have no problem with them playing for the public school that they are zoned. Allow them to play for any private school though? That doesn't exactly seem fair to me. So you can play for Evangel/Curtis/any team in the Catholic League without paying tuition/attending the school?

Why should they be allowed to play on a public school team? Their parents chose to keep them out of public school. Its not fair to the kids in the schools that lose a shot to play and are held to different standards than home-schooled kids.
Again, its a parent's choice to home-school their kid. Let them play on a home-school team if that's the case, but not in a public school team.

I say let them play for the public school in their zone. Their parents pay the taxes already, so let them benefit from it.

The way I read it, they would have to follow the already existing attendance policies.
Only eligible at the schools in their attendance zones.
If they lived in Curtis /ECA attendance zone shouldn't they be eligible there too? Not just the public school?

yes. It will also open pandora's box for star athletes who are not making the grades in school. I can see coaches and principals recommending home schooling so the GPA and other scores can come up high enough to qualify for Division 1 schools.

They should all play on the same team "The Homies"

How can you have school pride, if you dont think the school is even worth attending?
If this passes, shouldnt a person going to a private school be able to play sports for a public school if they so choose?

Uhh cause the parents pay taxes. Don't be so short sighted on it. Keep in mind many home school parents don't want the bill.
