never say this when talking about players working on new contracts

when they make more than 98% of Americans, nobody wants to hear that shite

The only reason I can see for making that excuse is the player in question has allowed a bunch of relatives he has never even met to come out of the woodwork and leech off of him. But even then it is his own fault and no one should pay him more money out of sympathy.

it is hugely retarded

reminds me of the Patrick Ewing quote to the same effect when he was playing - and when asked about it he responded something like "well sure we make a lot of money but we spend a lot of money too"

they just lose all perspective on what they're saying

Considering how much money these players make for the league, I have absolutely no problem with a player trying to get as much money as he can. These players have a very small window to make lots of money, and with they way they put their bodies on the line, I think they deserve every bit of it.

Way to miss the point

And bruschi is a horrible analyst. He epitomizes the guy who hasn't let it go yet. If the pats had given him a letter jacket he'd probably wear it on set daily.

I agree, but you still can't say you "have to provide for your family" as the reason.

100,000 a year will provide for your family reletively well. The rest is living lavishly. There is a big difference.

Not for only 3-4 years, which is about the average NFL career. I don't know the context of this, since the OP forgot to mention THE frickING PLAYER HE WAS TALKING ABOUT . But due to the short careers and non-guaranteed contracts, "providing for the family" is a legit argument for NFL players.
