More problematic about the Pac-16 is whether Texas A&M will join it. The unintended consequence of blowing up the Big 12 is that the Aggies are being courted by the SEC, which would love to get a foothold into the state’s fertile recruiting grounds. SEC schools signed just six of Texas’ top 100 recruits in 2010 according to Rivals.com (Big 12 schools signed 66 of them).

The SEC has the powerhouse programs – Alabama, Florida, etc. – that could beat UT head-to-head for some players. League schools would covet the chance to play games in College Station, gain local media coverage and be able to pitch to Texas kids that the SEC is their “home” conference.

Texas has nothing to gain by coming to the SEC...

1...like the OP said, they WILL lose recruits to out of state schools in the conference
2...they will get exposed by the SEC schedule...

The last sentence says it all--recruiting.

If you can't recruit the best talent, you can't play at a high enough level to bring in the $20M+ per team per year that the SEC currently does. The SEC already has a pipeline into talent-rich Florida; give it a pipeline into talent-rich Texas and you may be realistically talking $30M+/team/year payouts.

Texas has the hammerlock on Texas recruits, but now A&M is trying to pry Bevo's hooves off of them and it appears to be working.

hypothetically it could work. Nothing has happened yet.

Texas and OU will both lose recruits to SEC teams if they go to the Big PAC as well. The Texas blowhards have their tit in a wringer now.

texas will still get 90% of the texas recruits they want - A&M, LSU, arkansas, Alabama, Florida will get more recruits out of Texas - but Nebraska, Missouri, Kansas etc will get even less

I'm not sure. If the Ags can offer the big time recruits a chance to play in the SEC, they could legitimately steal a few big names every year.

Agreed. Once they settle into the SEC, they'll hopefully take an SEC mindset and expand and go after top coaches and demand excellance. Ag's have great potential, if they can get the leadership to demand it.

Players from Texas already go all over, including places like Alabama and Florida. Just because Bama plays maybe once every 2 years in CS will not lead to an exodus of Texas players to Bama. As long as UT is good, they will get the top Texas HS players, period.

Aggies could make headway though due to being an SEC team.

No more than currently. Kids that grow up wanting to play for Texas will not suddenly start going to SEC teams if A&M joins the SEC. Texas HS kids already go all over the country, there are still scholarship limits. Also if Texas expands their reach, why do you think they will not be able to recruit say more California kids?

Florida and Bama went 31-1 the last 2 years playing SEC schedules.

Why? You guys need to accept the fact that not everyone sees the world the same way SECtards do. OU gets a lot of kids from Texas, because its close. That won't change is there is an SEC team in Texas. Do you idiots think these Texas HS kids are not aware of the SEC? Do you not realize the SEC games on CBS and ESPN are currently broadcast in Texas?

Because the word is they won't travel past Arizona to play?

I think there is some anxiety among Texas fans if aTm goes SEC. But, it's not like recruits will be faced with traveling to Pullman, WA every other year. Our schedule will primarily be the south teams from the old Big XII + Arizona schools and CU. One trip to the west coast a year and who doesn't like that? And the Rose Bowl is still more appealing than any other bowl game.

TX-OU is *the* game of the year west of the Mississippi. The most elite TX players form allegiances to either based on the tide in that series. Those two programs will still have the pick of the litter IMHO. Texas' athletic budget, Austin, facilities, culture, etc. will continue to bring in who they want and probably more sprinkling of athletes from AZ and CA.

No doubt. Despite their on the field struggles, you can't deny they are a school has money, support, tradition, and a strong alumni base in excellent recruiting area.

If the ags bolt for the SEC, it becomes an immediate legitimate reason for them to steal a few recruits from Texas. As far as the rest of the sec picking off texas recruits... that is less likely, however, down the road this is also a possibility.

I don't know if Texas would be "exposed' in the SEC. But they don't roll through putting up 40+ against everyone in the conference like they do every year in the big 12. There's a chance they could lose 3 games a year, just like every other powerhouse school in the sec. That's just the way it is.

How has that "SEC Mindset" worked out for OM, MSU, Vandy, Kentucky, SC, and Ark? Have they gone after top coaches, demanded excellence, and produced results?

This is the truth, but remember the aggies have one thing the others don't. They are in Texas. And, historically, they are a better program than those other teams. I can't wait to see how all this plays out.
