I gave up a few episodes ago, and I'm a huge Wire fan and like watching stuff filmed in the city. I knew I was done when LaDonna found her brother. It was the most interesting thing that had happened in the series, they had building it up all season, and I still didn't really care that much.

The compelling subject matter just isn't there. Drugs and crime are much more interesting than John Goodman ranting on youtube, an Indian chief wanting to reopen projects and a failed chef cooking out of a trailer.
I almost feel like people who think this show is great are just telling themselves that because it's a show about NOLA and don't TRULY believe it's that great.

I still compare it to Mad Men. Some people think Mad Men is boring because "nothing happens."
Some people just like well acted and executed slice of life dramas. That isn't everybody's cup of tea. As well awarded as Mad Men is, for example, it's ratings are never very good. I am sure Treme's long term ratings will fall short of The Wire.
Just because it isn't packaged with action and big time dramatic events that make it eye candy for the masses, doesn't mean that only "liberals" or people that are forcing themselves can enjoy it.

what are the recent ratings? i know it is behind True Blood reruns. any numbers?
Posted on 6/9/10 at 10:31 pm to el tigre
The only numbers I can find online are for the first few episodes. The last numbers I find are about 800k people per week.

I love Mad Men. That is an example of a character driven show done right. Treme would be the opposite.

I really like Mad Men and really don't like Treme. Mad Men is a bit slow, but it's eventually going to get to an interesting story arc. Plus Draper is a really good character and so are most of the supporting characters (the only significant character on Mad Men I don't really like is Peggy). Treme, on the other hand, is slow to reach either nothing or something I don't really give a shite about, and it only has one character that I like (I half like Goodman's character and I half like the Indian Chief).

I enjoy Treme more, but I know a lot of locals in Treme, if I didn't I would imagine I would enjoy Mad Men more. (Although I am also sure I would still enjoy Treme.)
I think Treme does a lot of things right, the acting is great and like the Wire its execution allows you to experience its "slice of life" aspects without a narrative. But the one big criticism I would have for it is that it doesn't go far enough in aligning itself with serious issues and events that happened after Katrina. The housing fight is good, but it is the only time the story really addressed a serious post Katrina issue.
My biggest pet peeve to go with this criticism is the absence of Nagin. He HAS to be in this show ASAP. I don't care if he is in archive footage or just mentioned here and there in on camera debates. That "Chocolate City" only got one throw away line is crazy...

Yea and I don't mean to imply just because you like one you should like the other. Just a comparison that both are similar in scope, or lack thereof.

This show has no narrative focus. It's just a bunch of vignettes (most of which aren't that interesting).

What I don't understand is that Davis was all about ending the corruption and old way of doing things but as soon as someone gave him the get out of jail free card (bribe) he jumped at it. I guess he just wanted to make $$$$$ off campaign CD's.
That was the point. At the end of the day he had no principles like the rest of them.
I like to think of it in the same light as David Milch's second series with HBO, John from Cincinnati, which I thought sucked hard. But really, it didnt have a chance after following Deadwood. I think the same goes for Simon and this series. While I think Treme is good, and not as horrible as people are making it out to be, I can see why some tuned out.

For the life of me I cannot fathom how anybody but super-sanctimonious liberal art fricks could bear to stick with this show (and those of you who know me realize I'm not exactly a rabid right-winger)
I wanted to like it SO BAD. I talked myself into liking Goodman's character and the Indian Chief's character but they are as unbearable as the rest. (By the way - how fricking bad is this show if I've watched all 8 episodes and only know the names of 2 characters in it?)
There is not ONE likeable character on this series. I want to punch every one of these whiny, dependant, pretentious, liberal fricks in the mouth. And then do it again.
But I will still watch the show I guess. I don't know why - New Orleans guilt maybe
What an arse! Uses a forum topic to go off on "liberal art fricks" (I'm guessing his idea of a good movie is the Dukes of Hazzard remake) when all he has to do is change the channel and stop whining in public. arse. Hat.

i'm kind of wondering if Simon didn't stray out of his comfort zone a little too far with this. he went from Homicide, to The Corner, to The Wire...and now this....just a thought

Are we conserving them for some reason? And yes, it pretty shrill, liberal and annoying.

And there it is - the hackneyed "you're too much of a troglodyte to 'get it'" response.
I gave it more of a chance than it deserves and got out after 4 episodes.

I don't think I've ever seen a show get topics started every week about how much it sucks. You'd think people would just change the channel or something.
But we HAVE to stick with it because we feel like if it survives it can do New Orleans some good as far as boosting tourism, etc.
How bad are the ratings, BTW?

Mad Men is my favorite show by a wide margin. Treme doesn't deserve to be mentioned in the same sentence as Mad Men.
Mad Men is often considered "boring" but actually them trying to "rev it up" last season caused for it to be too much like Desperate Housewives. It went from being a 10 to being a 7.5.

Well thanks to True Blood starting the ratings jumped form .2 to .6. Still nothing great but maybe with more people watching True Blood 2.9 some people will keep up with Treme.
Maybe they should have paired the two together since Treme will only benefit the lead in with one more episode.

Are you kidding me, guy? I am insanely interested in foreign films, docs, HBO series, etc. My point is that I am a social liberal and I still can't bear Treme. It's so preachy and politicized that I can't understand how anybody right of Keith Olberman could bear more than 2 episodes before giving up.
Ugh - never mind... why am I trying to justify myself to you?

This means you haven't watched more than two episodes so how can you judge the show?
I'm as conservative as they come but the only thing that bothers me on the show is the portrayal of ALL cops as evil bastards.
It is not like they sit around every episode and attack republicans.
Heck last episode a guy from Texas said people in New Orleans have a poor work ethic.
I don't see how Creighton complaining about all of the things that actually went down in the city and the way people outside New Orleans responded makes him a liberal douche.
The show has been boring as hell but it certainly hasn't been pushing some hugely liberal agenda at me.

I've watched every episode, but ONLY because I'm native NOLA.
I was just making a point and defending myself against that unfair attack.
