Case to pitch Ranaudo or Ross against Irvine

Ranaudo: If he can go, he should probably be given the ball. We saw what Irvine could do to mediocre pitching in 2008. They faced Ross I'm pretty sure. They didn't face Ranaudo until game 3, and he dominated. Another good reason to throw him is that if you need him to pitch on Monday Night, he's got a better chance of resting his arm for at least 2 days. A third reason I came up with, and LSU fans may not want to think about this, but if we were to lose to UCI with Ross, we'd pretty much have to throw Ranaudo likely against Kent State. I'd rather have him pitch against the better competition. You are assured of this if he pitches game 1.

The 1 good thing about throwing Ross would be that Ranaudo could come in to close or relive in any situation and could still come back and Start on Sunday.

agreed...obviously if we were a 1-seed, I think we'd start Ross w/o much consideration. But against Irvine, I don't think we have a choice but to start Ranaudo. Though I think Ross can come out and get the win against UCLA as well, provided we get some runs. I like our bats in that park.

Ross is a better match for UCI because he pounds the strike zone and UCI batters never swing. They try to draw walks and get the pitch count up. They won't swing at high fastballs from Ranaudo and he'll throw 100 pitches by the fifth inning.

I'm about to say something that I rarely say on this board:

Good analysis.

FWIW, I think Ranaudo and Ross each only pitched one inning against Irvine in game 3.

ETA: Here's the box score

While this is a good point...

1) I'm not sure that Ranaudo isn't showing better control at the moment

2) This is a complete guess, but looking at UCLA's stats, it appears they take a pretty similar approach to what Irvine does.

Another fair point, is this still the rant?

I would go with Ross, better control than Ranaudo. If he gets hit he gets hit.
If Ranaudo starts and struggles with control, then who do you go to. Panic sets in and LSU is done.

Use Ranaudo in relief if you have to.

I like starting Ross and I would have no problem pitching Alsup against Kent St. in a losers bracket to save Ranaudo to get us in the final. After that... Bourgeois, Bradshaw...

You'd take the chance of going home without throwing your ace?

Yeah, I wouldn't mind Ranaudo in relief either. I wouldn't be upset about either starting, though I'm leaning toward Ranaudo. I just think we have to put in whoever gives us the best chance against Irvine, without looking ahead at all. We lost that luxury by not being a 1-seed.

A week ago most people here would have said Ross was our new ace cause he has come on and pitched well late this season... He has the extra rest with Ranaudo pitching so much Sunday. I think you save Ranaudo for Saturday. Ross can certainly hold his own.

I dont know if I would start Ranaudo against Irvine from what the stats show They are not the same team from 2 years ago and judging by what kind of staff UCLA has some how some way I would want Ranuado against UCLA'S staff looking ahead. I dont think Irvine will put the pressure on the bases like they did 2 years ago.

we are gong there to win it, not just win a game

if coach feels we need renaudo in championship then i ok with going home without using the ace
