the principals of the LHSAA know not what they've wrought

next year teams will get 10 practices and no game, down from 15 and a game.

here are the teams i've seen

Chalmette-started off slidell with their passing game, then ran over and through them for their most complete effort over a legit 5A team since the hurricane

Slidell-gained a bunch of yards, but was kept out of the end zone for the most part. Chalmette players said they were just "big"

East Jefferson-ran the triple option well, but needs to hold onto the ball better. their D flew to the ball. they're gonna be good, but their district is great. it makes me sad that coach salt could have had my maroon and white like that.

Holy Cross-still throwing the ball and reloading there, but soft on D up the middle and can't run the ball

who's looked the best elsewhere?

No big deal... Spring football doesn't honestly tell you a whole lot anyway with regards to the season forthcoming.

ETA, not a whole lot that 10 practices can't accomplish anyway.

Depends. Will this throw out the shirt/shorts/helmets practices? If you take out those days and go full pads for 10 days I agree. Still, they're removing revenue by ending the games.

Rundown from WM site about WM vs Ruston:

After watching the spring game, I think WM will be hard to beat this year.

Defense will be stout, very stout. The DL will be as good as its ever been with Chucky Hunter anchoring the line. The LBs will be another solid group with Tyson and Casola. The DBs will be solid as well with Austin Cain, JD Brown. They had Mims at safety and was playing Bubba Reeves some at LB and SS.

The OL will fine. I heard that Ash Aulds, who plays center, busted up his arm and did not play. #58 Greg Hawkins did a good job and was there seemed to be no problems on the center-to-QB exchange. #65 Sam Cockerham looked impressive and will be a force. #54 Josh Remedies played well. #75 Edward Boley looked dominating and looked to slimmed down and has some good speed.
Second team OL looks to be coming along good.

QB play by Turner was as good as you can get. Looked to be sharp on his passes and will be dangerous in the open-field, ran over a would-be tackler scoring a TD. Mims did OK and he will get better in the future. Conner Osborne did not play, I think he is still in baseball.

RBs looked good, Bubba Reeves ran hard up the middle getting lots of yardadge, Tyler Cain had some good runs. #20 Dennis Gooden will turn some heads this year at TB. #25 Xavier Woods is an exciting runner and can score from any spot on the field, look for good things from him in the future.

Lots of good looking sophomores on both the defensive and offensive side of the ball. A few standouts were #97 Anthony Yruegas on the DL, very impressive with some speed, also #99 Marklyn England, a big guy who will be another solid addition on the DL for the next three years. #35 Tyrell Jones at CB looked solid in coverage.

WM will make another serious run for the Dome in 2010.

It only takes one day to make all the figs that think "Oh I can play football" quit, during Spring. I still love the 15 practice/1 outside scrimmage format. But I honestly think they can get it done in 10 days.

Who used to make bets on how many people they could make quit on the first day of full pads?

1.) Kick off coverage practice, specifically onsides kick. Always kicked to my side, coach always put those he wanted gone on that side.

2.) Kids that thought, "I'm fast, I are running back." They usually never showed up for the third day after 2 straight days of gap blitzes/chute runs.

Seems like a stupid restriction, but honestly spring ball is really only good for staying in shape.

The only point is to get freshman used to the practice format/schedule of varsity. Most teams skill players are either in track or baseball during spring practice.

the obvious solution is to get your school to start a rugby team and have your football players play rugby in the spring.

Unfortunately, most HS football coaches are knuckle dragging troglodytes who can't think outside of their puny paradigm.

Wrestling.

It actually teaches the overweight, ridiculously uncoordinated football players how to use balance and move their feet.

Right. They'd rather their players "get bigger" in the offseason, which means they get fatter and slower.

Or lacrosse. It builds up endurance and is very similar to football in that their is a bunch of hitting.

Wrestling, track, and powerlifting should be required for football players in offseason

What's the usual for summer practice? My sophomore son has practice starting May 30, four days/week thru the end of summer. No time for vacations, etc.

Are you sure it's practice or just summer workouts. I don't think you can start practice until August. Coaches will allow a player to miss a certain number of workouts for vacation, etc.

You can't practice in the summer. You can have 7 on 7, but no full team practices and no pads. It's just workouts.

The weightroom/running has seemed to work out pretty good for WM. I remember us getting beat down by Neville in the spring game one year. Joe Coats told Shows, "Yeah but you guys will get in that weight room and beat us in the fall." Then again we did a lot of work in the mat room as well for those saying wrestling.

I coached wrestling for a pretty good while and I watched my football players that rode the pine move to starter the following year and starters go from average to all-district.

I've always believed that size is overrated in high school football because of the base line technique abilities. In college and the NFL, everyone has somewhat good technique, so size and strength can make a huge difference.

In high school, most players are slow and uncoordinated so a player with good balance and footwork can easily dominate a larger player.

And don't even get me started on endurance. Football players are the most out-of-shape athletes in school.

Rugby teaches form tackling, relies A LOT on conditioning, gives your team time to play together in a similar sport to football, etc. So you get the weight training, conditioning, tackling skills, team chemistry, etc.
