Dandy Don says baseball team has lost confidence to compete

Good morning, Tiger Fans. In baseball, LSU team lost to Kentucky 9-4 Saturday in the second game of the three-game series. The Tigers have now lost four straight SEC series and have seen their chances of playing in postseason play consistently slip away. A few weeks ago I wrote that I did not believe the problems with the baseball team were coaching-related, but I am starting to question several decisions Coach Mainieri has made in the recent slump such as removing Paul Bertuccini in Friday's game with a two-run lead entering the bottom of the ninth inning. Bertuccini had Kentucky off balance and very confused, while Matty Ott had been struggling his last three appearances after the seven-inning relief effort against Alabama.
Looking at the body language of the team sitting in the dugout and their lackluster base running, I get the impression that they have lost confidence in their ability to compete. In Saturday's game, Coach Mainieri pitched Jordan Rittinier, Chris Matulis, Mitch Mormann and Joey Bourgeois, and they all looked like batting practice pitchers except for Bourgeois who pitched 3.1 innings, did not allow a hit or a run and recorded three strikeouts. Kentucky banged out 17 hits including seven extra base hits. It does not appear that LSU has any pitcher who can consistently break 90 miles per hour on the speed gun. I do not know if the pitchers are out of shape or what, but I do know that Matulis and Mormann came to LSU with outstanding fast balls.

if cpm had not put in ott in the ninth inning- i would have had problems w/ him

OK. It obvious they've lost the drive to compete. PM's problem is that it has happened so late in the season, there isn't really enough time to get it turned around. It really looks like they are just going to play out the rest of the games and get the misery over with. I wouldn't mind seeing them go ahead and pull the seniors and guys we aren't coming back and let the inexperienced guys get some sec experience under their belt.

I guess the Dandy One, in Mainieri's shoes would have called Ratphuc Hobley in from the 'pen.
Coach Mainieri talks to his pitchers and Micah Gibbs. He knows the score a lot better than any of us spectators. If he replaced Bert w/ Ott, he had his reasons, and I'm sure they are sound ones.

This was kind of the impression I got just from watching their body language yesterday. Gives off the vibe of kids who'd rather be somewhere else.
I think Friday night's loss was the death blow for this team. Losing a game like that is devastating.

i think you need to face reality. PM has made poor decisions all year. He may be talking with his players but he's NOT LISTENING. Just he said he knew Rittiner was in trouble but decided to leave him in instead of pulling. (in Mainieri's words"..they figured him out" Result---TWO 2-RUN HOMERS! Wake up, man. The roses don't smell like roses anymore....

Congrats, Don, on your firm grasp of the obvious.

Why? Bert. has been our best pitcher of late, and Ott obviously has not.

And I think you need to take your 10 posts and go away.
Nothing like losing to bring the true Rantards out. Where were YOU when this team was 32-6?

He is right. I was watching them yesterday and I saw no pride, no swagger,no confidence, no enthusiasm. Looked like they were just going through the motions, no "we are LSU".

Are people really blaming Mainieri for going to his closer in a save situation? Pitching Matty Ott in a save situation? Wow, there are some retarded fricking people on this board.

Yes, they're saying that PB had the hot hand and Ott's confidence was down since his start against UF. It's a valid argument.

Its a stupid argument, you trust your closer and put the game in his hands in that situation, no one had a problem with it when he entered the game

If Paul's arm was falling off, I get it. If not, sometimes it's good to watch from the sidelines, especially if you're starting to press. That's why I thinking benching a couple guys would have been in order last week. It's too late now.

Questioning bringing in your closer with a 2 run lead heading to the bottom of the 9th?? Really? Come on man. Bringing in Ott was the right thing to do. Hindsight is 20/20. I will say this about the pitching. I don't know if they're changing mechanics or what, but Joey Bourgeois was consistently throwing 92-93 before coming to LSU. Now he's barely hitting 88-89. Maybe it's time for a new pitching coach.

Why do some fans live and die by what DD has to say each and every day??? Good grief!!! Can you people not think for yourselves and draw your own conclusions about LSU athletics without the help of DD???
