I read that coming out of high school, he turned down about $750,000 signing bonus to sign with the Astros. Why three years later, did he enter the NFL draft for a bonus that was less than that (and he was picked where everyone projected him), when he stated his reason for entering was money for his family?

Maybe they didn't need the money then or maybe he just wanted to leave.

Some boosters need to start a fund to keep these kids in school when this shite happens.

jones hurt his arm at the end of last season and wouldn't have been able to pitch this season at all ... he wasn't gonna stick around to pitch in his senior season and he needed to get in this draft in case a rookie salary cap is locked in place in 2011 ..

If he turned down that kind of money right out of HS then someone was whispering into his ear that he could be a top draft pick in a couple of years and do a lot better. He rolled the dice and lost (somewhat).

Could have been worse, he could have had a career ending injury and gotten zip.

We all know that it is an easier rout to make more money in the NFL right away, rather than spend 3 or more years in the minors, not even making half as much as a backup saftey would his first yr in the league.

Football is much better financially in the long run...much better than skipping around the minors making 50k a year.

chances of making it the NFL and cashign in long term are better than MLB for him

not calling you a liar, but does anyone have a link to this? If I recall he got drafted pretty late...this seems to be too high of a signing bonus

I would guess had he known that three years earlier, he wouldn't have turned down the 750k. He gambled that he would become a high draft pick with a signing bonus over 1 million. This is all excluding the football vs baseball argument. With the expectations that come with being a 5* prospect, he probably believed that he would eventually be a first round NFL pick.

This. NFL player lifestyle is much better than minor league baseball player lifestyle bouncing around on buses to away games.

I heard as far back at 2 years ago he had two kids already. Honestly I think he left because he wanted to start making money. He knew his potential was in football. Sure baseball offered more, but in the long run he knew he best shot was football

Cause his NFL salary is >>>>>>>>>> than his MiLB salary he would have had for the next 5 years.
