Interior Secretary Ken Salazar ordered a halt Thursday to all new offshore drilling permits nationwide until at least the end of the month, stepping up scrutiny of the entire industry amid a catastrophic oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.
Anyone in the industry know if this is for real? Didn't see anything on the MMS website. I am about to find out when we send in our APD (Application for Permit to Drill) early next week. It will be interesting to see who eats the dayrate while the rig waits for Obama's blessing.

Very True. I also saw it on TV a few minutes ago.

Made to order disaster, now Obama can try to nationalize this industry also.

Lets hope it won't last long.

this is just a political game they're playing to make the naysayers stfu...it won't last more than a few weeks and will have little to no impact on gulf operations

are you sure?
educated 'gestimation'...once they figure out how many more people they will be putting out of work from halting drilling ops, they'll have a change of heart...and it is only on "new" leases...all leases that have been issued still have 'Go' status (99% sure about this)...the oil and gas industry in the GOM is entirely too beneficial the the US to completely halt for an extended period of time

In other news, after an 18 wheeler accident in Lafayette, Bobby Jindal has ordered that no more 18-wheelers can enter the state until inspectors figure out why the accident occurred.

its a completely ridiculous response
how much money is going to be lost because of this?
how many jobs will be put on hold?
how many people will be sitting on their hands waiting to get their 7-on so they can pay bills because of this?
obama's prolly never seen a fricking rig that wasnt on the news or in a picture.
he has no idea what hes doing to an economy by halting part of an industry because a freak accident occurred.

Agree 100%.......just wait until this bastard tries putting all of the independents out of business with this liability BS. We'll really be rolling in jobs at that point. But hey at that point maybe he'll offer the unemployed a few piddly government jobs making $25K/year.

Can anyone tell me how much drilling this is actually going to stop?
I mean there aren't that many rigs that can do deep see drilling, and it's not like they have made those drilling stop. It also doesn't stop anyone from setting up at the next site, so unless there is currently a rig being moved to it's next location, this won't actually stop anything.
It all seems like a horse and pony show for the true hugging homos.

This is not just offshore drilling. This is all drilling.
The linked article explains a little bit, but I suspect more info will come to light today.

"Very specifically, understand the action that I am taking today and that is we are not granting permits for additional wells," said Dept. of the interior Sec. Ken Salazar.
The freeze includes five shallow water and two deep water wells already in the permiting pipeline. It is unclear if that number includes several wells in Alaska that Shell had planned to tap this summer. They do not yet hold permits.

They cannot be serious with this.

we just received internal clarification that it is, in fact, what we all suspect. no new APD's until their report is complete.

If I am a small operator on the shelf with a lease that burns in May I might be forced to sue the government here with the possibility of losing my lease. Not only that but doesn't this open the government up to all kinds of lawsuits due to rigs being idled? When some of the leases burned off California after the drilling moratorium was put in place the government lost lawsuits there and had to repay lease money.

quote:Us too. We might have to eat some dayrate over this unless we can pull a workover out of the air in the next few days.
