So what is the real story on lowering this box?

I have been reading the Enterprise was going to lower it with drill pipe. Now this article says:
quote:

The Joe Griffin was expected to meet up with another BP-chartered boat, the Boa Sub C, a Norwegian vessel that will use a crane to lower the contraption to cover the gusher of oil spewing from the seabed -- something that has never been tried before at such depths. BP spokesman Bill Salvin said the drop is expected at about noon Thursday.

OK, which one of you was this?

That's a pretty big box to suspend from drill pipe.

Yes it is. 5000 ft is also a long way for a crane to lower too.

I'd chose to lower it with drillpipe over a crane. They use drillpipe to lower casing liners much deeper than this.

Also, I was assuming they would use the drillpipe to bring the oil to surface. I don't think it will flow to surface on it's on so they'll have to come up with a way to reverse it out or lift it internally.

A parasite string might work but doubt one exists that could support that weight.

Probably more like 30,000 feet.

That would be a hell of a lot of weight for a single part line.

My thought would be that it is lowered in the water to the point where the derrick could get a hold of it. I would suspect that they are going to connect it to the riser of the drillship. If they are planning on pumping other things into the oil to prevent the lines from freezing and plugging they would have to have a way to get the fluids down from the rig to the top of the contraption.

I am pretty sure there will be gas along with the oil that will assist in carrying it up.

A salesman came into my office today and said that Frank's fabricated 22" casing that will connect to the tanker

Makes sense. They will need a way to pump it out, gas or not. We have to remember it will be mixed with water.
