1 year from now there will be little to no residual effects from this "disaster."

false

but i'd say at the present rate of progress BP SEEMS to be making at capping the well, i'd say within 2-3 years things will be back to "normal."

i think the media has done a wonderful job of riling people up and blowing this out of proportion. don't get me wrong, this is a huge deal and could be catastrophic for Louisiana, but this oil was supposed to be on land LAST FRIDAY.

now i'm not a chemist, and maybe this oil went underwater, but i do know that the day after the media started freaking out about 25k bbl/day, the slick shrunk...and now it's at least a day from first landfall with another day of good weather to help cleanup efforts.

+.5 You are probably right, but maybe it will be 2 years.

But, but, but...DeltaDoc and others said this would impact the way everyone lives their everyday lives for decades to come, or some such nonsense.

Y2K?

A lot depends on where landfall is with the oil, kind of like a Hurricane.

I hope you are right, but the fishermen who aren't working, and the condo owners who are dealing with mass cancellations might not make it to next year to find out. I think there has been a rash of positive info coming out in the last few days which is why the ivy league murder is leading each hour on all the news networks and the oil spill is already old hat...haha

Yep...I will readily admit that it seems I got caught up in the media hype. When I made that statement, it was based on the information I had in front of me at the time. Time changes, information changes and I am here to take my medicine.

For what it is worth, I am not altogether sure we can make any assessment one way or the other right now.

Here is what we know:
(1) fishing in federal waters is currently closed with no end within view.
(2) there are already a lot of people not working on the gulf coast that would be otherwise
(3) BP is trying something that has never been attempted at such depths to reduce the flow of oil by as much as 80%.
(4) If this does not work, it could be more than 3 months before the well is under control.
(5) It will be at least 3 months before the well is under complete control under any circumstance.

With reference to impact on our lives for decades, new drilling leases in the gulf are dead for the foreseeable future. You better believe that will affect the lives of individuals in the south in some way or another. It will also have an impact on global oil supply which means the costs of everything will be higher, even if only by a small margin.

Garland Robinette said today on his show that he did some research and found that this technique has been used successfully in 2-3k feet. obviously this is much deeper than that, but it's good to know that this isn't completely out of left field.

Whoever believes that this disaster will not cause "residual" effects a year from now are fricking idiots.

Maybe not idiots but certainly overly optimistic and maybe even ignorant or even in willful denial.

google :"Kubler-Ross". Denial is the first stage most people go through upon receiving bad news.

I hope the OP is right though but at this point I'm not convinced.

Time will tell.

This is the worst oil spill disaster in the history of the world still in the making. To say everything will be fine is a joke. Go ask the shrimpers and fisherman what they think. See how it will affect their lives for the next decade. If your income were tied to this you would be singing a different song.

This is true. This past year was the first shrimp season for the area affected by the Exxon Valdez spill. 11 years for the shrimp to come back.
