Just a thought on the dead turtles

Didn't LW&F open an emergency shrimp season on the east side of the river for a few days. I would suspect that T.E.D.'s weren't being used by the shrimpers, since they claim that they decrease their catch and they knew that LW&F had the spill to worry about. None of the turtles were contaminated, right?

That could definitely be possible.

Yeah that makes a lot sense. Wouldn't suprise me in the least

Has been suggested this is in fact cause. Testing still to be completed but one of the things they ate looking into.

Or the dispersant killed them instead of the oil

I would also suggest: if god intended turtles to survive oil spills he'd have made them out of dawn dish soap

I'm nearly positive I read in the Picayune or CNN that the tests came back and oil was not the cause of their death. I have no idea how to get back there to get the link because I've read so much but it was some time yesterday that I read that.
Now that doesn't mean they didnt die because of stress or their food sources being messed up/disturbed. What do sea turtle eat? I'm marine biologically ignorant.

better question - how many turtles actually died in nets 20 years ago before TEDs were needed?

I hope this is not the case. It would reflect poorly on the industry that as of right now is a victim. if they are killing the turtles it would be very Hypocritical of them , I think.

We found them dead all the time on Last Island

I read somewhere that some dead sea turtles usually show up on shore around this time of year. Not sure why.
Also, what are TEDs?

wrong.
they all died of natural causes, simultaneously, after drinking sea water with no contaminants at all. its a miracle.
And none of them went near the chemicals they are using to break up the oil.

Turtle Exclusion Device
Basically a trap door exit for sea turtle before the bag of the trawl.

the special season was open before ldwf enforcement was detailed to the oil spill, agents were out there, im not saying that some shrimpers didnt use the TEDs but what i read, is that only 5 of the turtles necropsied so far showed natural death, and it is true that some turtles do show up dead this time of year. the shrimp season closed at 6pm today, it will be easier to tell now, the actual cause of death (provided that turtles still show up dead on the coast, im just guessing.

I would suspect that had the shrimpers decided to re-rig their nets to not include TED's and found some tasty turtle in their catch, they would have had a nice soup and noone would have ever known.

This was a popular confession of some shrimpers at a hearing in Houma a few years back. They are very well versed in several culinary techniques. I would love to see Iron Chef America have their secret ingrediant come out of the nets.

on a serious note....
i happen to have extensive knowledge of how teds work and when it was not required by law and when required by law.......number one....my brother worked 5 summers in hs and college for my uncle who had a 35yr career in the business on a 68 foot shrimp boat....before teds went into effect, not 1 time was a turtle caught in the double bag nets nor a "try net"..in the 5 summers my brother said he saw 1 dead floating dead sea turtle...low figures...the whole reason for the "teds" is in fact it may have happened less than 1 percent of the time a turtle being caught in nets alive, the animal rights activist put this into effect and it became a law dealing a hugh blow to the shrimping industry years ago.....the untrained eye has no idea how much "payload"(shrimp) is lost because of teds being federally mandated.....
....speaking from experience, my uncle who is 81 yrs old who still drives and does everything we can do said, it is highly impossible that that many turtles died as a result of shrimpers all at the same time.....i asked my bro and he in fact said that there is no way shrimpers caught that many turtles in their nets all in the same week...that never happened like this in years this many turtles dying....
shrimpers know they had nothing to do with this because of the nature of what they do.....besides if a shrimper is caught and yes they do regular checks and you cant just remove a ted device on and off.....they could lose their boat....and their livelyhood...

WOW, does the punishment fit the crime??? This may need it's own thread!!!
So if a shrimper is in violation of this regulation they could lose their boat and no longer work in that industry.
Sooo if a an oil company is found at fault and their error causes un measurable damage to an area what's the recourse for them?
I know one is a small example and the other is ginormous and complex, but the little guy affected one specific endangered species and the Ginormous guy is affecting all of the species in that area. jus sayin

you cant blame the company ..... this happened because of human error/natural causes....
