One of the biggest pieces of garbage I've ever seen. How could someone want to make a movie where nothing but shitty things happen to the main character.

Monsters Ball was the same type movie.
Except for Billy Bob getting Halle Berry. But even that looked like the characters were miserable.
TV shows are guilty of this as well. NYPD was horrible in writing the Sczipowicz character. Partner fired, partner dies, wife dies, son dies, son gets sick. They finally left him alone for the last 2-3 seasons.

1. Because not everyone's life is a romantic comedy.
2. Because some actors are given the opportunity to show their acting chops in those roles.
By your logic, nobody should watch The Pianist or Mask. I thought Precious was a sad but powerful movie, and it was great to see Mariah Carey and Mo'Nique in roles completely different than what they're used to.
