Is this show all it's made out to be? considering going and renting the first season

Some will tell you it is the best show ever.
It certainly is interesting seeing the pervasive sexism of the time and the smoking and drinking at the office.
It is also very stylish.
It is also very very very boring.
I've watched season 1, twice to try and force myself to like this show, but almost NOTHING happens.
That is just my opinion, but as I said there are several people on here that just love the hell out of the show.

If you like character development, its pretty good. If you like single episode story archs, not for you.

I agree about the 1st season...it gets off to a bit of a slow start but as you move along into 2 (where I left off, I haven't started 3 yet), it gets better.
That being said, I started renting it from Netflix about a month ago on a friend's suggestion and its definitely entertaining if you like dramatic shows with lots of sex and a little bit of humor thrown in.

Its a character study where the characters actually change along with their circumstances. Some people aren't into character driven shows, but there is plenty enough change in the lives and background of Mad Men that to call it boring just because it isn't your cup of tea is way off base, IMO.

It's odd to me that most of you seem to think season 1 is worse than season 3. I really disliked most of season 3, I hated the whole "California" story arc.
Also how has this thread made it this far without someone mentioning the #1 reason to watch the show?

Yeah, I agree with this. I mean, it's one thing to say that you're not that attracted to her, but to make such a concrete statement like Rahan is a little strange.
