It really depends on what age bracket your friend is in.

If he is younger than 25, I would consider P.F. Changs a pretty reasonable first date.

Older than 25 and I would say Ruffino's or Juban's.

DiGiulio's. Sitting inside will help with the awkwardness - I've overheard some awkward first dates on the patio.

Or Tsunami.

Assuming he's college-aged: I disagree that Chelsea's isn't nice enough. You don't want to blow your wad out of the gate and have the girl expecting Manseur's every date-night. Plus it's a fun area to be in after dinner - martini's at Duvic's (also works with DiGiulio's )

Bonefish Grill is money.

Decent price
Good atmosphere, but not too romantic
Great bartenders and drinks
Smaller, lighter portions, so the booze will continue to be a social lubricant throughout the night

Zea might fit the bill. I don't know that it's jumpin' up and down with fun. I think the piano bar in Gino's is fun.

Start at Duvics for a cocktail. Grab a beer at Chelseas then slide over to Digiulio Brothers for a glass of wine and the cambazola appetizer. Walk down to Rock-n-Sake for some sushi. Return to Chelseas and see a band. Finish at Schlittz with a slice.

I don't care what age you are. You don't take a girl to a place like this on a first date.

Yeah, I'd be a little creeped if someone took my to Juban's on a first date, especially if I hardly knew the person.

You haven't been to eat at Chelsea's recently I assume. I posed the same question a couple months back, and I agreed w/ the response. Went to Chelsea's. It was cool. Still spent $70 bucks so it's not like you're getting out the door for cheap.
I wanted a place that has good/diverse food selection, enough going on to have a little background distraction because you're not having a heart to heart on a first date, and something that doesn't say you're too cheap. I rarely go to chains for dinner unless I'm asked to go.
Still seeing the chick so it couldn't have been too bad.

Chimes

Chimes is a bad move on first date IMO. Chimes is a place to grab a beer after or something.

ETA: In upper 20's...I'd recommend this place for 20-35ish.

Been away from B.R. for a while. Where's Chelsea's?

There used to be a bar in Bon Marche Mall called Chelsea's, and then there was a place called Chelsea's in that strip mall at Highland and State Streets.

I'm assuming that it's neither of those places!
