Does anyone else get a queasy feeling that...

The Bensons think that they paid for one Super Bowl, but they are not paying for 2? That we will now see an erosion of talent through the FA market?
Damn, I hope I just had fried food to close to bedtime.

I think you're on to something.
Benson, that cheap bastard, isn't going to spend the ,money again; that's why he's keeping Reggie and his $8 MILLION SALARY!
Hell, he dumped Grant because he wanted to reduce payroll and forgot Grant was the best defensive player we've had the last few years.
These moves really back up your position.

Saints can't make a big splash in this year's free agent market due to restrictions and the number of key players they are in contract negotiations with.

We lost Fujita and most probably Bell.
The team has wanted to get more athletic at the OLB for a few seasons; so, this is no surprise. We wanted him back...but not at Cleveland numbers.
As for Bell, something happened between him and Payton and it goes way beyond the cleat incident in the SB. One more point, Bell isn't worth $1.7 mill as a backup in our offense.
The Saints have the 2nd highest payroll and, luckily, we aren't losing any premier player...ergo, the payroll is staying high and there's no room to add another big name to the roster.

No.
Are you an LSU "fan"? Premature negativity is a characteristic of the fanbase.
Fujita is a great guy but can be replaced, prob. by someone younger and better. Sharper is 34 y.o. We want him back, but shouldn't break the bank to sign him. Hopefully he realizes he's best off staying in N.O. Bell? Love to keep him, but not a backbreaker.
Now, if Bush and Pierre Thomas leave, we may have a troubling trend.

Ive never thought Benson was "cheap"...he just had a short run of hiring a couple of lousy coaches..{Dicka..and Haslett}.hes redeemed himself. we now have Loomis/Payton/Williams!!!

I have been a Saints fan since 1967 and learned a lot more negativity from them than from LSU. Do you really want to compare winning percentages of LSU and the Saints in that time period? What are you, 16?

How so? considering there was a salary cap
They just paid what the league allowed them to.
I know this year is a different story with no cap, but I'm pretty sure winning the SB brought in much more money than they would've saved by being "cheap".

I have done business with the Saints as a vendor. If the price of an item is $1.00 they will call 10 times to get you to lower it to $.95, they beat you to death. I wish them all the luck in the world as a fan, but "cheap" does not begin to describe that organization. It's hard to figure out sometimes, but I have heard many others with the same experience. I don't bother selling to them anymore, it's not worth it, I let my competitors have that esteemed privilege.

Do you really think vendor squeezing is something only "cheap" NFL franchises do? Look at the Who Dat merchandise, squeezing people is a standard business practice in the NFL. Hell, it's standard business practice anytime Goliath is dealing with David.
Regarding cheapness for player personnel, that hasn't really been an issue since they broke up the Dome Patrol. Deuce got the biggest contract in franchise history. Brees and Bush are both getting paid a ton of money. Grant and Smith got paid more than they are worth. Vilma got a deal he was happy with. I see no evidence to support your queasy feeling. The Patriots have shown the way to a dynasty in this era, and that way includes not overpaying aging stars about to decline.
That's why Fujita's gone and we're waiting out Sharper. Bell is expendable if he costs too much, and I really think the cleats incident is playing a part. Payton saying "that's my fault" meant it was his fault for trusting Bell to do his job. Running backs are typically easy to replace anyway.

I prefer to think you are right and I'm a little paranoid, we'll see.

have you ever done business with any car dealership? if you have you'd know that this is typical of them... its their nature... my parents best friends own one, i was quoting a job for them and gave them my best price... he literally called me 20 times to get me to go lower and i couldnt cause my original bid was low enough... then he wanted me to do part of it and let someone else do the other part... i eventually told him to just let someone else do it.... car dealers will always try and beat you down

No, I wish I was 16. I'm saying, for cripe's sake the Saints just won a SB. And you're worried about Benson going cheap ... b/c he didn't resign Scott Fujita? LSU fans are ready to run Les Miles out of town on a rail after he won an NC 2 yrs ago ... and say things like, "we won't win more than 7 games in 2010, the offense will suck .." rather than just shutting up and seeing what the hell happens.

The point is, TODAYS LSU fan is a chicken little type fan that gets negative with the quickness.

Yep. That is indeed the point.

Benson isn't cheap, although at various times he has let his front office convince him to spend money in incredibly stupid ways.

The Saints have been right up at the cap ever since it was implemented. Remember having to cut Morten Andersen? Compare this to Tampa or Atlanta, two teams who have existed far below the cap for their entire recent past.

This should be the end of every thread crying about free agency.
