Additional skills you would like to see JJ develop this year

First off, leave the JL vs JJ thing out of this. It's not what this is about. We all know JJ has areas of improvement, I think its possible to be constructive about the criticism.
What are the additional skills you like to see JJ develop this year. Specific things he can do on the field to make plays.
(1) I think he needs to work on making pass rushers miss. Right now, he gets that deer in the headlights look with pressure from the ends. Also needs to realize that you don't need to be overdo the elusiveness part - subtle movements of the feet are enough to make the bigger guys miss. Jamarcus was terrible at this his first yr and most of the second but got really good at it at the end. I remember he burned a couple of defenses with his feet after making one man miss.
(2) JJ can throw short and he can throw long but needs to work on his intermediate passing. Both JR and Flynn got great at this over time at LSU. The regulation 10 to 15 yard strike to a WR on a crossing route. Out routes to the sidelines - especially helpful in clock mgmt situations.
(3) Screens/Bubble screens: This used to be the staple play for LSU QBs but with JJ, the timing seems off almost making it a negative play. Not an easy throw to make. Almost have to throw it in front of the WR loop it perfectly to gain that valuable second needed to make the play. JJ has to pick this up.
(4) Too many QB scrambles and open field hits: He can't be taking the kind of hits he did the last season and a half. Needs to learn how to slide or get out of bounds. Unless the game is on the line, the extra 2 yards usually aren't worth it.
(5) Mechanics: He still doesn't set his feet too well and when he does, he often takes too long too setup. Although I do think he improved as the season progressed and got quicker getting the ball out.
All fixable problems which will get ironed out with experience. I'm actually really excited for JJ this year. I think this is his time. I just hope it translates into Ws for LSU.

I'd like to see him shorten his release. He looks like a pitcher out there

He needs to learn how to read defenses faster, than he will be able to release faster.

step into the pocket so his blockers can maintain the pocket

quicker decision making, would make JJ look like a completely different QB.
Also I would like to see him develop the instincts needed to run the option. Because for whatever reason someone on this staff is hell bent on him running it several times a game.

alot of ppl didn't pick up on this. Alot fo the sacks actually wasn't the lines fault. JJ created them himself by dropping so deep that he wasn't even in the pocket.

Leadership and Maturity. I see him being the team leader for his junior and senior season. A lot of people forget how young he is, he doesn't turn 20 until the end of Aug.

Step up in the pocket more, too often he would drop back farther and farther and end up with the sack or incomplete pass. That being said, I think he'll improve alot and play great this year.

Leadership, maturity, not going through a windup like a major league pitcher, reading defenses, stepping into the pocket, etc. Basically needs to improve in every facet of the game if he wants to truly be successful as an SEC quarterback. Showed flashes at times based solely on athletic ability; not really showing much in terms of being a true quarterback (at least on a consistent basis). That being said, apparently thats who we've got to work with and Coach Miles has already said he's the starter, so I hope he does well.

just know the offense, inside and out, like he should... EVERYTHING else will fall into place...

Basically he just needs to not be a teenager. Experience on and off the filed is what is going to make him a better qb. I am really excited to see what hes got this season. This could be a really good football team.

Not get sacked if his primary wide out is covered.

he needs a quicker release, needs to take more shots down field, understand what the playclock is and how to use it, and quit dropping back so far like he's playing a video game.

Learn how to find more than the primary receiver in a pattern....among about 100 other things.
Posted on 3/4/10 at 8:51 pm to siliconvalleytiger
quicker release
be able to know what to do with the ball if his primary isnt open
have a better understnading of where 1st down marker is when he decides to take off
improve his accuracy on long and short throws
get rid of the pouty face
talk to media like he is the leader of offense not like mumbling kid
thats all I can think of now.
