Order Beef Tibs... you'll thank me later.
Be open minded, if you like spicy food you'll probably enjoy it.

Where are you going?
I would def get the veg sample platter then a couple of lamb or beef dishes depending on how many people you have...its all shared and you eat with a spongy bread called injera...you pull a piece of bread off and you it to pinch a morsel of food.
By far, my favorite ethnic cuisine.

Where in the great culinary mecca of NOLA would you suggest I look for one of these places?

Indian food wipes its arse with Ethiopian food.
And it is not spicy at all.

If you were in Paris posting at 11:50am Central Time you should have been getting ready to go there already.

so that was 6:50pm paris-time....it was a 9pm paris-time reservation. this isn't spain or italy, but people do eat later here.
food was really good. i'm not exactly sure of everything that we had, i went with 2 other people and we all got the 'assorted' plate. had beef, lamb, a chicken leg, an egg, all with different sauces. lentilles, green beans, a few other vegetables. a fresh type cheese. at the end, coffee.
then we decided it wasn't the end and had more drinks. some kind of mead-type drink, which we had before and throughout the meal.
we ended up becoming good friends with a 75yo Ethiopian painter who has lived here for 30+ years. Dude was putting down the mead like it was going out of style. claimed his grandfather made this mead-stuff, and they'd ferment it for 8 months--each month adding more honey. and that it was more like whiskey compared to the stuff we were drinking. lots of theories about the state of ethiopia, paris, and life in general. good times. also claimed to have worked at a 3star michelin restaurant in paris at one point(le pre catalan)--and he was giving us detailed information about ethiopian cuisine.
said he never ate in a restaurant in ethiopia and would never eat alone. and the typical thing if you like the food is to scoop some up in the injera and shove it in the mouth of someone at the table. so i guess it was in the ethiopian style that we ended up befriending the table next to us.
conclusion: i'll be going back very soon.

Any type of alcohol is pretty rare in Ethiopian places. I am glad that you had a good experience. I love that cuisine.

good times. I really miss that part of DC. I ate it once a week. Next time try the raw ground meat.
