NFL OT Rules

I'm not making excuses, because I think the team played like absolulte shite in the second half and Tampa Bay completely deserved to beat us...
That being said, I feel like NFL OT rules were written by a 4 year old. Seriously, the first team to score wins? College rules are so much better. After a hard fought 60 minutes of regulation each team deserves a shot to win the game. NFL's rules puts too much emphasis on a stupid coin toss.
It's not just when it hurts the Saints either...I've watched a lot of other great NFL games that were extremely entertaining only to end in this pussy arse form of OT.
Just venting...opinions?

When your defense can't stop Freeman at QB you don't deserve a shot a winning the game.

i saw some stat that said the team losing the toss has won more OT games this season. but i agree. dumb rule. missing 37 yd fg is also dumb.

If you look historically, the team that wins the toss wins more often.
I say that they should play another full period. After that, then play sudden death.

Sorry but I saw a defense that made some stops when they had to, just to have the offense choke and end up punting..
If I recall the offense scored on the first three possessions and then that was it!
For you to think a defense can be on the field all day and make key stops only to have your offense go three and out... your dreaming.. they didn't play great but they didn't suck..
The Offense has SUCKED. I don't know if its the fact that Shockey is such a big part and draws so many defenders that it opens the field up or if teams are just figuring us out, WE HAVE GOT TO DO SOMETHING!
HOw long is pierre out for?

I couldn't agree more. I absolutely hate the OT for NFL and I have hated it for as long as I remember watching NFL football. Yesterday was just another example.
If anything needs to change in the NFL, it's the OT rules.

What sucks about it?
You have 4 quarters to win the fricking game. Stop somebody and score if you want to win. You want them to keep on playing like CFB where they play an extra quarter or two. Rediculous.

I think whatever qb who had the higher completion % should be given the game victory.

First 60 minutes of college = football
Overtime in college = baseball
Overtime in college = baseball

Which is why baseball is superior.

He probably could have played in the second half, just like Reggie last week. Hell, Hamilton had one fewer carry than Pierre and Reggie combined yesterday. THAT should tell you that we're trying things out and resting guys...

I prefer the college method, but I still think it could be better. I like the idea the NFL has come up with, you have to go the whole length of the field. But if you score, the opposition should get a chance to match it. And it should go back and forth that way.

If you want to win then play defense and stop somebody.

We can debate all day about ways to tweak the NFL rules so that more people are pleased with the system but do not even begin to call the College way good in any way. College rules are just plain dumb. Not to mention if a team picks the ball of and the guy is tackled at the 1 yard line you start on offense from the 25.

The Arena League system wasn't bad. Each team gets a possession, if, after that, it is still tied. Sudden Death. That way, no one can bitch about not getting the ball.

I'm not familiar with the Arena system. So there would be a coin toss then each team would get a possession. If both teams score would there be another coin toss or would the team that scored last kick off again just like normal?
I'm asking because wouldn't there still be people bitching that the other team got 2 possession and we only had one. We lost because they won a coin toss and their offense got the 2 chances.

That's why I say just play an entire period, or play 2 10 minute periods, with one team starting with the ball in the first period and the other starting in the second period.
*******OR*******
Be a fricking man and deal with a draw at the end of regulation. No OT, except in playoff games.

There may have been a coin toss before the first possession, but, after that just kick off like normal.

I wonder what the reasoning is behind not just doing this. If both defenses step up you will essentially end up having to do this anyway.

If you have read the NFL rulebook, then you will know that this OT rule would NOT be outrageous.
"If, during regulation, a team has scored on all offensive possessions except for end of half or game, that team must have an offensive scrimmage in overtime."
Under the current rules, you can score a touchdown everytime you touch the ball and still lose, if the other scores a touchdown everytime they touch the ball and win the overtime toss.
