June Jones is the second best coach at resurrecting programs

1. Took Hawaii from a winless team to a consistent 7-8 win team over a nine-year period, including a BCS game invite. Keep in mind this is with the shittiest facilities known to man.
2. Takes SMU, who hasn't been to a Bowl game in 25 years, to an 8-5 season with a very impressive performance against Nevada in the Hawaii Bowl. I'd be willing to bet SMU contends for the C-USA title most years for as long as June Jones is there.
Have to give credit where credit is due

SMU could be a sleeping giant. Plenty of talent to go around in the Dallas metroplex alone

+1. June is a great recruiter, and his offense will be unstoppable in that type of conference.

June Jones gets a lot of credit, but much credit goes to whoever is running the athletic department over there because they're finally taking football seriously. SMU/TCU next year could have BCS implications.

eh, they still lost to Washington State. That is and of itself makes them not back yet imo
Their freshman QB looks like he'll be great though

Who is the best then? Saban?
Posted on 12/25/09 at 3:37 pm to TxTiger82
Yes, because he has done it in the toughest conference, twice.

well then they are below par... And like he said, could be a sleeping giant

What about Brian Kelly? Took Central Michigan to new heights, took Cincinnati to two BCS bowls. If he succeeds at ND, then he deserves mention.

Saban also walked into two of the premier jobs in college football that never should have been at the level they were at
To me, what Meyer did at BG, Utah, and then UF is more impressive

But he wasn't exactly taking over talent-less teams here. At LSU, he inherited players like Josh Reed and Rohan Davey. At Alabama, he inherited Andre Smith and Javier Arenas.
I don't think you can compare what June Jones is doing to what Saban has done. June Jones is literally rebuilding programs from the ground up.
Saban finds underachieving programs with tons of potential and helps them realize that potential.
Jones is a freakin miracle worker.

I do agree though that what Jones with some of these schools is more impressive to a degree. Michigan St, LSU and Alabama are schools that shouldnt have needed rebuilding. Hawaii and SMU are very different stories.

Look at where SMU has been the last 20 years. They may not be all the way back, but it will not be long.

Same could be said for where UF was

Oh yeah...
And it deserves mentioning that the single greatest architect of any program in history is clearly and obviously Howard Schnellenberger.
If he can build FAU into, say....another South Florida....
That would certainly cement his legacy.

Are you kidding? They have outstanding facilities - Waikiki Beach, Maui in general, the Big Island surf, the list goes on and on. Gomer Pyle could recruit players to live in Hawaii for 4-5 years, who needs a fricking weight room when the surf's up?
That said, June Jones really is good at bringing programs back from the dead.

In the '60s Bear Bryant called the state of Florida the sleeping giant of college football.
This is not to denigrate what Schnellenberger did at Miami -- or Bowden at FSU. But they didn't just find lead and mystically transform it into gold.

I thought Rich Rodriguez was first but I might be wrong.
