18 this year. Actually 1 more than last year. Seasons 4, 5, and 6 were originally suppose to be 16 episodes each. Season 4 was cut short by the writer's strike to 14 instead. To compensate, Seasons 5 and 6 were suppose to be 17 episodes apiece.
Season 5 lasted the planned 17 episodes. A couple of months back the showrunners announced that Season 6 was getting an additional hour partly because they have so much ground to cover in the final season.

I started watching Season 1 again mid week... Should have all 5 done by the start of Season 6
Def have some suspicions going back and watching season 1 now that I know a lot of what is going on.

The centricities for episodes 10 and 11 have been revealed, but not the titles of the episodes.

Cannot wait til Feb 2nd....
Spoilers:
IMO the first two episodes, entitled LAX, are going to be them getting on the plane the first time to head to Australia. I think with them choosing to air it on groundhogs day, it is gonna take on the feel of the movie. The bomb will have worked but pushed them too far back and now they are gonna re-live everything again. Like Jacob said "Everything is just progress".
Just a hunch I have.

When are we going to start seeing commercials with new footage?

The problem with the reset theory is that it doesn't seem like it would work logistically, with the characters. 75% of the characters from the plane are written off the show - are they can't bring them all back. And what about the new characters? They would have to be absent

I started rewatching the entire series in early July and just got to season five about two days ago.

Not until it airs. There are going to be no new footage of any kind this year, because they say if they show a single scene it would give a ton away.

If they do the reset, Frank is likely to directly be involved in 815 this time, since he was originally supposed to fly 815. How Miles, Desmond, Faraday, and Juliet work their way back into this I have no idea. I think Boone, Charlie, and Shannon are supposed to be fairly integral to this season though.

Almost All the characters on the other side (Eko, etc.) were killed. Maybe they can get away with ignoring that side of the Island (like they did in season 1). But it still seems difficult. LOST has been rolling characters in and out every season, and basically we are talking about putting 50 together somehow
