Check the 125 man roster on LSU's website. There are 85 true/redshirt freshmen and sophomores. Yes, that is counting walk-ons, but that's still alot of underclassmen.
Good point. Thanks.

I think outside the offensive line where we have lost some guys to attrition and have not recruited very smartly, that we are very talented with few better at all other positions.
I think development and use of talent can be reasonably questioned though.

Our 4*'s get pushed all over the field by other teams 2 and 3*'s. Doesn't matter how good you recruit, if you don't develop that talent you get bypassed.
LA Tech manhandled LSU on the field. LSU talent, upon enrollment was vastly superior.
This a a fallacy. Many 4 stars are a yr older than some of the 2 and 3 stars so are better in high school. Kids develop physically at different rates. You can coach like hell, but if your 4 star has peaked his soph yr and a 2 star continues to grow and develop physically thus becoming the better college player.

completely agree...we are talented at the SKILL positions on offense however we are very week on both lines, average at LB and solid in the secondary with a some obvious standouts
Good post. QB play is some of the weakest in SEC though.

Absolutely correct. Our O line and D line are mediocre. At best. Recruiting rankings are heavily weighted at the skill positions and are subjective to say the least. People read those rankings from year to year and make unwarranted assumptions about overall talent and depth.
I've been following LSU football for a very long time. Longer than some of you have been alive. LSU fans historically overrate its talent in down years. "If only we had the right coach . . .". I remember the myth of Bear Bryant saying that if he had Charlie Mac's talent he'd win the SEC every year. To the extent he said anything close to that, he was jerking people's chains.

Too bad so many of the morons who are howling for LM to be fired actually believe that lie. I have had several people swear to me that it is gospel truth. I simply shake my head and turn my back on them. I have given up trying to educate the stupid on urban legends.

We're talented.. but young. IMO it has to do with the lack of competition on the lines in practice. Their should be legitimate position battles with the new talent we've pulled in the last 2 years.
I think our OL is going to be very strong next year. DL.. boom or bust.

Tons of attrition on the offensive line as well.
only 1/5 positions MAY have been affected by this

But after looking around a bit, i realized we are not as talented as i thought.
miles isn't the recruiter people have made him out to be and/or he isn't developing talent
there is no excuse for our OL or DL sucking

Only for 2 more games Our starters have good experience, some of them just aren't good. Our depth.. and the immediate future of our team is young.
I just hope they develop. You're right though, the issue is on the lines.. and our recruiting/attrition on the lines has been pretty damn awful.

it's a lot more recruiting/development than attrition
the only position on OL or DL that attrition would affect possibly is LG

we have lost a lot of talent on the o-line through attrition and are very very young on the o-line. We have lost something like 10 o-linemen from the last 5 recruiting class. We have 2 seniors and 1 junior on the 3 deep depth chart for the o-line. From 2005 Kyle Anderson, 2006 Steven Singleton, Zhamal Thomas, Snyder, and Matt Allen, from 2007 McCoy, Jarvis Jones, and Kentravious Aubrey. From 2008 Clay Spencer, from 2009 Ainsworth. Thats a lot of depth to lose and a good portion of which would be juniors or seniors this year.

I have been saying this for the last two seasons. How many of our players start for UF or USC for that matter? Think about it.
Some obviously but I would say far less than 25%

That may be a slight overstatement, but you're close. I'm going to repeat: historically, LSU fans vastly overrate the talent on the team, especially when there are coaching issues. This year is no exception.

yes returning 3 starters, 2 of whom are RS Seniors, and having a true junior and RS soph at center = VERY young

depth is weak, but we haven't needed depth
the OL isn't the DL where we sub in and out guys

ONE POSITION has been affected
so of all the guys we lost, only ONE may have started THIS YEAR

I think you are making assumptions that are inaccurate.
With the OL, upgrading a single position can often by chain of events upgrade 2 or 3. If there was quality, experienced depth, you would think that would be a possibility. I do not agree that LG, C, or RG are "set in stone" if there was a quality player available.
Now, it's possible that all of those 10 guys just weren't any good either which would support your position that the talent evaluation is poor at OL. Furthermore, I agree that the development has been poor as well, particularly in the pass protection area. Size can somewhat account for the poor run blocking. But, we are getting no gains in the passing game from what should be an agile OL.
The bottom line is, whatever the reason, our OL is well below average. This is what Miles should be criticized for mostly. It is by far the biggest problem with our offense. The playcalling issues that everyone points to is in large part a product of the poor offensive line.
There are very few solutions to the offensive woes when your OLine can neither run block or pass block. It is truly debilitating.

As I said elsewhere, most popular recruiting services end up being heavily weighted at the skill positions. And a lot of kids don't perform to expectations.
Top recruiting classes are great, but they're no guarantee. And it's not always the coaches' fault. I'm not talking about LSU or any particular program.
