If you are so sure Miles was yelling clock it, to whom was he yelling this? And present some evidence to show whom it was. Also add why he yelling it to this person(s) and make some sense in your rationale.

could have been to any players down the field. Possibly his senior WR lafell or maybe tolliver.

FWIW, I have no problem with Miles calling for a spike with 2 or 3 seconds on the clock, which is what the clock read when Toliver initially went down and at the start of Cauble's video clip that shows Miles making the signal. So even if he was calling for a spike initially, I can actually understand the initial reaction. Now lying about it is a completely seperate issue, but one must also remember that he may not have intentionally lied. There was a lot going on in those final 60 seconds, and Miles may not have even "remembered" making that motion in the post game press conference. If you asked me what my reaction was when we returned the blocked FG, I couldn't tell you because I don't remember exactly what I did ... I probably put my arms up in the air, I might have said hell yeah, I may have high-fived someone, but I'm just guessing because I don't have a frickin clue what my reaction was . Point being ... when something happens so quickly, it's hard to remember exactly what ones initial reaction to anything was.

All that said, the ending sucked and our coaching staff blew it. But, I think Cauble should be ashamed of how he presented the story.

Although I tend to believe Miles, and I think the video shows Miles clearly looking directly at the referee and Ole Miss defender coming up with the ball, I can now certainly see where someone else could look at that video and come to the conclusion that it appears he may be calling for a spike. Honestly, we will never know, because both of the signals are very similar motions in that circumstance, and the only one that knows for sure what Miles was calling was Miles himself. Miles says he was calling "down" and I see video that corroberates that, so until proven otherwise, I contend that he was doing exactly what he said he was doing.

He very easily could have been yelling this to his receivers that were down there already.

Like I posted earlier I think Miles did not expect for JJ to complete the pass and had no plan in place when it happened. He was looking for anyone at that moment to listen for him as he yelled "_____ it". Notice I didn't say clock. As I keep looking at the video I cannot say with certainty he said clock but he did say "it". When he realized they didn't have time to spike it he Angus Younged down the wrong way on the field trying to get a field goal in. By that time someone told JJ to clock it and he did essentially ending the game. Miles may not have communicated clock it to JJ but someone did which has been admitted to by JJ himself.

Tolliver and Byrd are right there.

Sincere they're the receivers they're right where the ball is spotted. So they can look at Miles.

The other players are running down the field.

After Miles made the signal, Lafell and Tolliver were also.

You can read his lips on the video.

No ref signaled that it was Ole Miss's ball, so there was no reason to say "he was down". They immediately began marking it as a first down for LSU.

If Miles wasted any time saying "he's down" that's time that he could have used to get the fg unit on the field anyway.

Not trying to flame, but did Miles do anything in that last minute to make us think what he is screaming there is rational?

Not Miles, which is the issue with many. ANd yes, the buck does stop with him--I agree.

This is the gaping plot hole in the "He was down" clan's argument.

Random scenario ... When there is a questionable LSU catch on the sideline that the refs have yet to call in bounds or out of bounds, you as an LSU coach or player wait until they actually make the call to give the catch signal to the ref if you're standing there right on the LSU sideline in front of the play? Hell no, you hope everyone on that damn sideline is signaling catch to the referee to - hopefully - influence the call. Heck, if you want to imagine a real play, think back to the Peterson INT against Bama, same kind of deal.

I don't know if Miles called for the spike or was saying he was down (I tend to believe Miles given video corroborates what he is saying), and no one will ever know, but the point you just made doesn't make any sense and certainly isn't some major "plot hole" as you are asserting.

Just as I thought folks--no reasonable answer and the shortest thread on the "clock it" debate ever.

Thanks.

My question is what the hell does it matter (the details)?

It was a frickup of epic proportions on the coaching staff for whatever Miles was yelling.

Ten years from now, it'll be on every top ten sports bloopers show you can ever imagine.
