Coyote Blues vs. Ninfa's ... only criteria for my wife

is that we go to a Tex Mex restaurant that makes homemade flour tortillas ...
I've been to Ninfa's quite a few times. Always good, always consistent and my wife and I share the beef, shrimp, chicken, pork and ribs platter.
In the beginning on here, I read nothing but positive reviews about CB, but in the past few days, I've read that the portions are smaller (maybe have gotten smaller?) for the price they charge ...
We want to try CB's, because it's new and we have never been there, but are we better off at Ninfa's?

CB's flour tortillas are not homemade. So you may want to stick with Ninfa's just based on that.
The food there is good, but the last time I went it was not nearly as good as the first. I get the feeling that their staff is overwhelmed by the rise in popularity. To be fair, the place was packed last time I went.

I did not know that. I always thought they were.
Thanks for the clarification.

To me, Ninfas is my top pick in BR. Coyote has tried to knock off Ninfas green sauce but in my opinion has failed significantly. I mean Coyote does have things you wont find at Ninfas like duck and a couple other exoctic items. But with me, I stick with the tried and true and stay with Ninfas. I know I cant go wrong by going there. Also its one of my top picks for frozen margaritas.

i've been to ninfas and Cb this week.
Ninfas- Shrimp wrapped in bacon with jalepeno sliver were outstanding. Steak quesadillas were good, but a little too much cheese for me, i mean a LOT of cheese. Banana chocolate fried dessert was incredible. Overall A
CB- Sampler was good. Nachos Ok, chicken quesadillas great, tamale, incredible. I had the Steak quesadillas, and were seriously lacking in flavor. I didn't like at all, esp for the freakin price they were. Overall B-
I'm a big fan of casa maria, for the steak quesadillas (great flavor for steak), chicken enchilada, and apple pie dessert.
Just my .02

Me too. People think I'm crazy for liking that over the others, but the exotic stuff isn't my thing anyway. I like regular ole tex-mex

I know, Casa Maria is cheap and shitty but I love it.
I've never been to Ninfas, but I've been to Serranos and that is NOT Mexican.. not the kind I like anyway.
I had like shrimp skewers..?

Have you tried El Meskal in Gonzales? It's about 10 minutes from us.
Hole in the wall mexican joint. Great for a quick lunch. I'd hate to see what the kitchen looks like though.
Shrimp quesadillas if you're really hungry, speedy gonzales if you're not that hungry.

Never even heard of Casa Maria. Where is that?

That depends on your definition of homemade.
Coyote Blues tortillas are not handmade. They make a fresh dough, roll it into balls, and then drop it into a tortilla machine in the kitchen. Voila, you've got tortillas that were made a few minutes before they hit your table. I was given a chance to see the machine work, so while they aren't handmade, what you're getting is much more fresh than the restaurants that use pre-made tortillas.
The tortillas at Ninfas are made by hand by abuelitas, but more importantly, they use manteca. So the tortillas at both Ninfas and Mi Padres are money (easily my favorite) because they're made with lard.
Ninfa's and Coyote Blues are both terrific restaurants. Light on authenticity, but a great quality of food, solid management, and plenty of consistency.

Try La Mestiza on Airline in Pville. Very good. Sister restaurant of Mestizo's in BR. Excellent Margarita's too.

Best Tex Mex in Baton Rouge. Might be the best in the state.

I hate Mestizos, their processed cheese and their twice chewed meat.

I agree. If you ever are in the area, go to Casa La Vida on Coursey. You won't be disappointed, I promise.

I've been there. It's not too shaby. It would make the top 3 for Tex Mex!
